Larisa Alexandrovna: GATES Iran-Contra & Treasonous Past Matters Now
Edited on Tue Dec-05-06 10:58 PM by Land Shark

Treason? Eh, Ancient History

at-Largely by Larisa Alexandrovna

Gates Nomination hearings: Democrats... you there?

Okay, I give up, what is the statute of limitations for being involved in selling arms to Iran and depositing the money made to a terrorist group and their drug cartel in order to overthrow a foreign government that was democratically elected and doing it all behind the back of Congress? Have we moved so far into treason-ville that something like Iran Contra seems trivial in comparison? This criminal activity in the 80's made Watergate look like Romper Room and was called treason by most anyone within reach of the Constitution.

Iran was our declared enemy and we were giving them support via money, arms, and other clandestine services.

So then, why am I discussing this now?

I just caught the tail end of the Situation Room on CNN and noticed John King making some bizarre comment that Iran Contra is seen as ancient history and how refreshing it was to see such intelligent thought go into the questions and answers. Yes, adults discussing things, imagine that. But to the point, what about Iran Contra?

So I ask again, have we gone so far toward fascism that criminal conspiracy to defraud this nation, and give comfort to our enemies is no longer something to discuss at a confirmation hearing? Is simply enough that Gates is not Rummy? Or do we want someone whom we can trust and whom those on the ground can trust?

{snip}

This is an administration claiming that Iran is near done with their WMD program, ready to strike us and Israel dead. How is the questions of Gates' past actions in a conspiracy to deal arms to Iran not relevant now?

When we "little people" go for a job interview, we are asked about our previous experiences and such. If we lie during our application process, it is grounds for termination, usually.

1. Gates is a snake in the grass
CryPoppy appointed him as Director and then told Texas A&M that he would give them his library only if they would make Gates Pres of Board of Regents.

Mr Gates is a very dangerous man and he is Baker's Boy, all the way.

Anyone who thinks that Gates is 'better' than Rummy is hopelessly naive.

2. This hearing was a huge disappointment
Incredibly UNINSPIRING!!!

Democrats were a little TOO ANXIOUS to go on Christmas Vacation.

Lets hope they come back with a little more ammo after the holidays.

Keep after them Larisa!

11. Establishment Dems don't want IranContra-CIA drugrunning even alluded to anymore.
They thought they had buried it all pretty well for Poppy in the 90s.

5. In second grade, a third-grader said he'd give me a quarter
tomorrow for the old padlock I had on a rope. I said okay, and surrendered my padlock, heavy with hidden value, and starting thinking about what to do with tomorrow's quarter.

The next day, I saw him again at the house of the boys who were our respective friends. He seemed annoyed when I asked him about the quarter he was going to give me. With an aggrieved air of exasperation, he said, "That was yesterday", as though my effrontery was the basis of some moral or intellectual deficiency.

6. We are in deep, deep trouble
if we can't trust our "representatives" to actually represent us.

Hopefully the new crop of fresh blood will come in with something like a fire in their bellies.

If not, we're screwed.

8. Meanwhile, the EAC sets things up for Gates' voting company too
called Votehere.com, although he may no longer be named as an official director. Completely paperless cryptographic (i.e. totally secret) voting. The EAC is encouraging this now as "Innovation Class"

13. This over sight of treason is a good example of the crux of the problem
While Republicans and the CIA were helping Israel plunge the knife in Carter's back, they said that Carter was being naive and unrealistic, that they knew better. They were doing all this for our own good. Well, Carter is looking pretty good right about now. Does the world wonder where we'd be if the right wing hadn't been able to undermine the peace process? They whole process of secrecy, funding, more secrecy, more arms, more deals, and more secrecy has been taken to its full extent, and what do we have to show for it? Corruption, bankruptcy and WWIII, near as I can tell. But lets keep pretending that these nice rightwingers really know, or care, what's best for us.

17. This all gets swept under the rug as State Secrets...
ask the average American what Iran-Contra was all about and I'm sure most would not be able to explain it as succinctly. Corruption is alive and well and likely will continue to live on through Gates.
