Dems who voted against the stem cell research bill...16 of them.
I have not been paying that much attention today, so this surprised me.

http://downwithtyranny.blogspot.com/2007/01/third-pelosi-bill-passes.html

"Speaker Pelosi is on a roll. Her First 100 Hours Agenda is sailing through Congress with wide bipartisan support. Today the House overwhelmingly "approved a bill that would loosen the restrictions on human embryonic stem cell research imposed by President Bush in 2001, inaugurating the second such assault on the administration's stem cell policy in as many years. Thirty-seven Republicans joined 216 Democrats to pass the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, which would allow federal funding of research on stem cells from embryos slated for destruction at fertility clinics."

"The 16 Democrats who voted against the bill are mostly right-of-center dogs, like Lincoln Davis (TN), Jim Marshall (GA), Gene Taylor (MS-- who actually votes more frequently with Republicans than with Democrats), Mike McIntyre (NC), Collin Peterson (MN), Alan Mollohan (WV), Bart Stupak (MI), Rahm Emanuel's Heath Shuler (NC), Joe Donnelly (IN), Brad Ellsworth (IN), Nick Rahall (WV), and Jerry Costello (IL). Moderates Marcy Kaptur (OH), Daniel Lipinski (IL), Charles Wilson (OH), and James Oberstar (MN) also voted against the bill."

"George Bipartisan Bush has already declared he will veto the bill, which lacks 37 votes to override a presidential veto."

I have seen a lot of those names before. I did not realize they would be against this bill. Surprised me. I remember some of them are with Democrats for Life and some with the groups below, Blue Dogs and New Dems.

1. 2008 will show them that a zealot GOP fanatic minority
Edited on Fri Jan-12-07 12:01 AM by Erika
won't rule the majority. I thought they might have been smart enough to pick up on the 2006 elections.

2. I don't agree with their votes, but I guess I have to say that maybe
they votedthe way the people who elected them wanted them to vote. Inoticedquite a few of the people you cited were fromred states or at least purple ones. I wishit would have passed with over 60 votes too, but isn't it the job of a rep to vote the way the people who elected them want?

4. Most of them are from VERY conservative districts
A few, like Marcy Kaptur, are generally liberal but pro-choice (Kaptur comes from a working-class, Catholic, labor-heavy district).

10. Kaptur
is usually one of my favorites from my days working at the afl-cio. I won't hate on her for one issue.

12. But these stem cells are going to be destroyed.
Looks like they would rather see life destroyed than life possibly saved.

13. I know. I think the vote is crap
I'm just saying why they did it. If it's any consolation, it's that there are even more Republican defectors on this bill.

6. Yes, that is their job.
To vote how their district wants. My congress people never ever ever worry about that anymore though....they all vote with Bush. Nelson pays no attention to us. He had almost 3000 calls against the war, and never listened.

Apparently the ones who "wanted" it didn't call...they just assumed they wanted the war.

Yes, that is their job. But I suspect some are carrying personal beliefs in this area into the political arena. Some there don't even approve of contraception.

5. They might vote differently to override a veto
Perhaps Pelosi will lean on them.

7. Charlie Wilson OH-6
Proudly announced that he was joining the Bluedogs in his opening speech. He disappoints me more every time I see him.

8. typically
they don't whip abortion-related votes. So its not really a party thing. I'll the votes of these members on other issues. In the end, this will be an issue in the presidential campaign. And that's not a bad thing.

11. My own Blue Dog congressman voted yes on stem cells.
He has often pissed me off, but I'm happy we agree on this.
