Lawyers' board pays $1.65m in restitution

Five Massachusetts lawyers accounted for nearly three-quarters of the $1.65 million in restitution paid to clients of allegedly unscrupulous attorneys last year, according to a new state report. The Massachusetts Clients' Security Board made restitution to 42 clients in the fiscal year that ended Aug. 31.

The total amount of the awards, financed through a $300 annual licensing fee from the state's approximately 52,000 lawyers , marked the ninth time in the board's 32-year history that it exceeded $1.5 million.

The five lawyers who accounted for the biggest payments in fiscal 2006:
Harvey Jaffee of Lynnfield, $436,576; Paul Joseph Healy of Rockland, $259,054;
Stuart Abrams of Gloucester, $255,941;
Anthony Raoul Bott of East Orleans, $126,666; and
Maureen Andricopoulos of Tewksbury, $153,705.

All have been disbarred, and Jaffee is deceased.
