Smithfield Workers Plan Job Walkout Today To Observe King Day - 01/15/07

Workers at Smithfield's Tar Heel North Çarolina hog processing plant plan to walk off their jobs to observe Dr. Martin Luther King Day today. The workers had petitioned Smithfield management to allow them the day off to celebrate the lives of Dr, King and of farmworker leader Caesar Chavez but management refused. Workers are in an ongoing struggle at Smithfield to organize a union and improve the harsh working conditions at the world's largest hog processing plant.

This is one nasty company so it comes as no surprise that they would choose not to observe Dr. Kings national holiday.
