John Murtha: “It’s a whole new Ballgame”
by Mike Whitney | Jan 17 2007 - 2:50pm | permalink

snip//

Other Democrats have reluctantly winched themselves onto the antiwar bandwagon sensing that public support is rapidly eroding. Only Murtha has consistently put himself in the line of fire by threatening to cut off the funds which lubricate the war-machine.

Murtha is demanding that the administration “stop extending tours of duty, stop depleting our strategic reserves, and retrain returning soldiers so they can be ‘recycled’” according to the normal procedures. He knows that the military is gravely over-stretched, so he’s trying to derail the war with bureaucratic red tape.

“We don’t like to micro-manage the Pentagon,” averred the Pennsylvania congressman, “but we have to because they are not paying attention to the public. You cannot sustain a war when only a small percentage of the people support it.”

Commenting on Bush’s desperate plan to surge more troops into Baghdad, Murtha said, “George, we sent 10,000 troops in to Baghdad 5 months ago and it got worse! We had the highest number of casualties among Americans and Iraqis in that month.”

“We don’t want any permanent bases, we don’t want any torture we’re going to try to close down Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib,” Murtha said. “I don’t think you get any information from people who’ve been there for 4 years, George. I think its time to send them back to the countries they came from.”

3. But Jack, W says you don't have a plan.
I really can't decide whether Murtha or Webb should be the one to call Bush out on this war bullshit,

I want to see Bush tremble like the little brat that he is. And both of those guys are man enough to do it to the little jerk.

Who could do the better job? (ie., make Bush piss his pants?

19. No kidding! I'll stay tuned for that one, also.
Really nice strategic maneuvering for the Dems - to put him out front, and showcase him like that. What a refreshing, welcome comparison after bush's idiotic, one-dimensional emptiness. Next time he'll win by a MUCH larger margin. It will be MOST advantageous to have people like him as our face to the rest of the country. We'll ALL be more easily regarded as Fightin' Dems! VERY nice juxtaposition to Nancy's prominence. It helps us cover ALL the bases, the yin AND the yang, the male AND the female, the nurturing AND the tough-love. The "mom" AND the "dad." And all those other stereotypical labels. Something for EVERYBODY to like, to relate to, AND to vote for!

20. I agree why do we have to have "A PLAN"
We went in because of WMD...we stayed because of oil...

MY PLAN

Recall our troops and tell the Iraq's it's their country.

4. Grab hold of the bastards, Jack . . .
. . . and don't turn loose. Don't take your eye off 'em for a second.

Maybe the rest of the Dems will discover some backbone . . .

8. Murtha Plan? Haven't heard of it - - Just kiddin'
The repubs go around acting dumb and stating that the dems don't have a plan. Murtha was out there A Year Ago with his Plan. Now Richard Clarke is beginning to be seen around the media due to his new book, novel, (gotta get that one), and saying almost exactly what Murtha has been saying and is doing an excellent job too.

13. Yes.
He visits those poor, maimed kids every week.

And he doesn't take camera crews with him like the shrub does.

14. Clark/ Murtha 08?
There are good choices out there I know, trust me, but its a nasty playing field and these two have good insight through hindsight to navigate without being snookered.
Now if they start talking about restoring our constitution *&co has stomped on. well

18. I've been saying/thinking this for years. Screaming it at the TV every time
Edited on Thu Jan-18-07 01:22 AM by Auntie Bush
bush*, Rummy, Cheney et el kept saying we have to detain all those men because they hold valuable information that could help prevent an attack on our country bla, bla, bla. And we must torture them to get that important information.

“I don’t think you get any information from people who’ve been there for 4 years, George." I think its time to send them back to the countries they came from.”

Maybe if we'd treated them humanly they could actually be returned to their countries and get on with their life...but no...we have to torture them...make life hell...then they become hell bent on ruining our lives as we did theirs. Besides they now have no lives worth living and no country worth saving for their children...who they've filled with hatred for America...and are the next generation of terrorists. Good job, well done, George. Just like all the other jobs you started. You're batting 100.
