What's the big deal about the SOTU |
|
It's nothing but an annual glorified campaign speech that gives the 24/7 media more oxygen to spew their useless drivel.
What we can look forward to: "Hey, Bob, is Teddy Kennedy dozing off?" "Hey Candy, Hillary's body language sure is hostile tonite." "(Insert name) is the President's special guest." "There were ____standing ovations." Yada Yada Yada
Thank God for DVD's.
BTW, deep-six the Saturday radio address while your at it-I blame Reagan for that (among many other things.).

4. Why should we give a damn when the President speaks anytime? |
|
The answer is that the American political landscape focuses a great amount of the prestige of the Office of the President. While Wilson was the first President to give the SOTU in person, FDR was the first president to really make appeals to the American people. Since then every President makes speeches to the American people and because of the prestige of the office, we are expected to care. The difference is of course, that when FDR spoke, it was worth listening to.

6. It has seldom had significance ..... |
|
Perhaps William Henry Harrison would have chosen a pass on his two-hour speech if opportunity afforded; his last words - forty days later - reportedly were: "Sir, I wish you to understand the true principles of the government. I wish them carried out. I ask nothing more."
