For such an educated, well-spoken woman, this really surprises me.

Otherwise, I thought she was fairly impressive tonight.

1. It may not be standard English
But it makes her sound more like a typical American. I don't think it can hurt her to sound folksier.

2. She will be a tough candidate. She has the name, the money
and she won't make mistakes. She is a known quantity during an anti-GOP election cycle.

3. She's picking up language slants from Chelsea, I found myself
doing that myself. I think she does so well, especially with Keith, when she knows she isn't going to have to be on the defense. The more I've heard her in the past few days the more I like her. Can't say where I'm going to vote, waaaay too early, but I'm sorry, I'm liking her answers, her tone, and all that is Hillary....

4. Probably her 'folksy' gene
:eyes:

I thought she stunk.

If this is the field we've got, I may go with Edwards because at least he'll say the word POOR.

7. I agree.
I can not look myself in the mirror each morning if we don't do something to raise up the poor. At least shelter them for Heaven's sake. When I lived on the Island of Okinawa, there were no street people that I could see. I was told that there were large extended families, but still, we are all part of the human family.

5. She was great. The presentation was annoying. Showing just little clips here and there instead of
a normal presentation of the whole interview. Maybe it will be better tomorrow when there is no SOTU speech to distract.

6. I know what you mean
When I was a junior in high school, my English teacher told me if I could make it through an entire oral presentation without saying "you know" that he would give me an A. I actually broke myself of that habit that year.

teacher! I didn't listen to her on KO but when the OP brought it up..I remembered the way too many times I have heard my senator say, "you know".

9. I've seen her do that before
I thought maybe it was because she was nervous, but I don't think that was the case during Keith's interview.

10. I thought she only said "you know" when she was being more exemporaneous.
It did not seem to be there as much when she was using a "canned" reply.

11. She isn't my candidate of choice
but I thought she did pretty well, even if she meandered around a couple of direct questions. I doubt the "you know" thing will make much of a difference to most folks, if they even notice.

13. Many broadcasters do it also... "You know" is the "like" -- holding phrase of the older generation.
Edited on Tue Jan-23-07 09:52 PM by Radio_Lady
It's a mental place holder while people are thinking of what they will say next. See also: "Um-m-m" etc. Books have been written on how to overcome this speech habit.

However, if that's her only drawback, I still think she can go the distance.

Warm regards,

Radio Lady
