New Kerry Tax Credits
Would Protect Soldiers from Pay Cuts

Smith and Kerry Propose Tax Relief for Those Who Serve

Washington, DC - U.S. Senators John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Gordon Smith (R-Ore.) today introduced legislation to bolster small businesses and their employees who are called to military service. The legislation has been endorsed by the National Military Family Association and the Reserve Officers Association. “Our bill provides needed help to the men and women who serve in the military,” Kerry said. “The tax credit will help small businesses compensate for the loss in wages sustained by those who go to battle. It also provides tax credits for businesses, to help offset the cost of paying temporary employees who are hired to fill vacancies left by active soldiers.”

2. Thanks, wisteria
Sen Kerry introduced so much legislation in the 109th to aid active military and veterans that never made it out of committee. It was sad to see the "support the troops" Republicans ignore good legislation that was aimed at supporting the troops.
Guess this one has a fighting chance. What a difference a Dem majority makes.
:-)

4. This is what I expect from Kerry
but not from my Senator Smith. This will be another feather in Smith's cap (and good on him), but as I am cynical (by experience, and not by nature), I won't give Smith much wriggle room.

He has until 2008 to show what he's really made of. I for one will remain skeptical.

10. He may be feeling remorseful at this point. If we can get solid legislation through
to alleviate some burdens on the troops, then welcome Sen. Smith to REALLY supporting the troops the way DEMOCRATS do.

5. I want to see a roll call vote on this - who REALLY supports the troops?
Let's get 'em on record.

Thank you Senators Kerry and Smith.

9. Last week's small business Committee meeting
included getting information from vets running small businesses and small businesses dealing with employees who are in the reserves or guard. The comments showed the true burden on the families and the businesses employing these people. The possible 2 year tour of active duty represent a real hardship - Kerry and Snowe spoke of writing legislation to help - so more legislation to help will be submitted.

11. Good for Senator Kerry!
This time around the legislation will get a real shot. Last time, the repugs ran the show and it was impossible to get anything this progressive passed.

Go Kerry! Go Dems!

Notice how many repugs (yes, they are still repugs no matter how they have flip-flopped lately) are singing a different tune now that they are in the minority?

12. A rich man who considers the poor man's likely problems, and acts to.
mitigate them. One in a billion. Though you do seem to have as fine a team of leading Dems as I could imagine.
