Do some people not realize we can be involved in all out war...
in this country very soon, and do they not realize that this country is falling apart from the inside. We have many more problems in this country than I can ever remember and people are literally losing there minds ( look at the news stories). There are a lot of comfortable people who are not paying attention, if you look at the media everyone is starting to come out of the woodworks to warn people how close we are to all out world war...

These crazy people in the whitehouse and their friends are determined to start more wars before they leave that whitehouse so that whoever is the next president will have to fight it and therefore start the draft. But,I believe the war will be in this country because the borders are open, tunnels are being dug (and we don't know how many more there are)crime is out of control, the rich are against the poor, some of those who profess to believe in God are against anyone who is different than themselves, and many other problems so numerous to mention will be the downfall of this country. Bush is talking about he is protecting us how and from what, from what I can see he is the ultimate danger to us and the world.

I would like to know how homeless are being thrown in the street and in Michigan homeless are losing fingers and other limbs due to frostbite because bush doesn't give a damn about us! Where is the affordable housing, jobs and medical care. Why in the hell should we worry about a terrorist when our country is trying to destroy us a every turn, what country will we have to protect. In the meantime, bush and cheney are stocking their bunkers and getting ready for the coming war...

6. I am tired of waking up every morning ...
and hearing about all of the Americans and Iraqis who have died and then some new law or legislation that takes away more and more of our rights. I believe that if enough people really knew what was at stake they would do more...

7. The people who own these corporations...
will use there money to protect them from the bombs and the crime that is taking over in most cities in this country. Those who think that they are comfortable in their small towns better open their eyes because it is spreading and when you open your mouth it will be too late...

US defense budget; larger than the rest of the entire world's budgets combined.

Defending whom, while Americans starve?

9. I try to look at it this way,
when the funding from China dries up and the rest of the world stops bankrolling our thieves they will have to leave the US and find a new host, like all parasites.

Let's make sure we lock the door behind them this time.

16. Pinochet must have been running out of cash
to keep the goon squads at bay, these "folks" (favorite phrase of*) have lots of it and short of a manhunt similar to the WWII death camp "folks," they will probably get away with it.

But then again being the cynical skeptic I am, I still think Tim McVeih and Ken Lay are chilling on a beach drinking Pinia Coladas with the American taxpayer picking up the tab.

11. Good post.
The threat of broader war in the middle east--and ultimately war w/ the entire Muslim world (all 2 billion of them) is very real, and appears to be what Bushco are ultimately after. That's why we need to impeach the sonsofbitches. Now.

17. I can't fault people too much for just wanting to live their lives.
What we're dealing with in this country are the effects of a bloodless coup d'etat, carried out by Bush's minions in 2000 and enabled by five members of the Supreme Court, fucking morons that they are. Same thing happened when Kennedy was assassinated; the military-industrial right-wing took over, hijacked our foreign policy and plunged the country into a disastrous war that was almost our ruination. It just proves that the power elite can commit almost unimagineable crimes in this country, but as long as the press is compliant there are never any real consequences. People may eventually take to the streets in this country, but things will have to get a whole lot worse for that to happen. And by then, of course, the Pentagon will have perfected its anti-riot raygun. Good times!

12. I somewhat disagree.
Currently we are not yet in the midst of the sort of systemic failure that could trigger the level of conflict such as we saw after the Great Depression, nor are we in the sort of Great Power gridlock that resulted in WWI. But most likely we are headed in exactly that direction.

While our system has problems, most of us live rather well, we are the Fat Americans. There are currently no rival empires challenging us with whom we could slide into a general war, at least not right now.

We might be in the early stages of an internal disintegration over cultural/social/political differences, a revisiting of our huge regional conflict of 140 years ago. However while that is certainly a threat, once again I do not see that threat manifested absent a crackup on the order of 1929.

That is the good news. The bad news is that a crack up far more serious than the global economic failure of '29 is in fact looming. It is the conjoined twin problems of peak oil and catastrophic climate change that threaten the stability of the system of the world and for which the pig headed elites that have exclusively run this planet since the collapse of the soviet union appear to have no good plan other than chaos and conflict.

We seem to be in the early stages of the resource wars that are going to be the hallmark of this crisis. Oil has not quite run out of its ability to sustain global economic growth, but it is teetering on that abyss. Our foreign policy is clearly focused on control of the planet's major reserves of cheap oil, but that is a policy that is guaranteed to result in ever sharper military conflicts and that will, as the demand for oil continues to push past the supply, slowly drag other large nations into the fray.

When the system really does start to fail I expect that all of the simmering conflicts here at home (the culture war) will boil over. As the american dream falls apart, we here will become vulnerable to the malevolent ambitions of the hate mongers. The extremists, and in particular the rightwing theocrats who have been preparing busily for just this opportunity, will have their moment of opportunity and they will seize it.

making plans for a disaster and think we will be left to deal with the mess that they have created, because they sure don't act like we are in a dire situation...
