Libby Believes NBC News Could Clear Him

By MATT APUZZO

WASHINGTON -- Attorneys for I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby believe that NBC News holds
a key to clearing him of perjury and obstruction charges in the CIA leak case.

Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, wants a federal judge
to let his lawyers question Andrea Mitchell, NBC's foreign affairs correspondent, about
when she learned that the wife of an outspoken Bush administration critic worked for
the CIA.

-snip-

A key dispute in the case involves Mitchell's NBC colleague, Tim Russert. Libby says
Russert told him in July 2003 that "all the reporters know" Plame worked for the CIA.
Russert said that never happened because he didn't know who Plame was at the time.

-snip-

Libby's attorneys want to show that Russert had heard that Plame worked at the CIA.
Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer has already testified that he told NBC
reporter David Gregory about her. If Libby can show that Mitchell knew, too, they think
they can persuade jurors to believe Libby's account of the Russert conversation.

3. What's interesting about this neato legal stage production is
that, if scooby actually manages to convince the jury not to convict him, that small victory firms way up the direct line of information and control back to Rove/Cheney.

If the entire staff of reporters covering DC had the information and that came to light, somebody had to tell them and the evidence all points one way.
I wonder, if this Libby/scooby/scooter/scootie/cootie perjury/obstruction case hadn't set itself up, would Fitzgerald have, through clever questioning, have manufactured one?

I think there was enough shaky logic in several stories so that directed careful questioning could have delivered up another culprit to put the entire sordid story into public view.
Fitzgerald is a very smart and dedicated man. I'll bet he does not utter ten sentences a day that are not goal oriented.

5. Mitchell has been a whore for the regime all along
I am sure she would say what ever is necessary to protect the regime and any of its members.
