Just saw the Romneys on This Week.... |
|
I think the Republican frontrunners better watch out. They certainly present themselves as the All-American couple.

I think Romney has some appeal. His wife was no doubt both up to and coached to appear strong and sympathetic cutting a softened Hillary-esque image. Romney has some real problems with Flipper. He's now NRA, more or less opposing pro-choice, and being Mormon frightens Fundies.

I don't think they're going to like his "flip-flops" when they become apparent.

3. Watching in my area right now. |

Romney tried and dodge the bullets with the questions about him being a flip-flopper. He took them alright, but I think in this race it'll come up more and more and weaken his chances.

with the fundie base. They'll tolerate a more mainstream Protestant like the chimp as long as he's seemingly strong on their simplistic concept of "values" - strongly against abortion and gay rights. However, as a Mormon who has been a social moderate in the past, he's going to have trouble convincing the Falwell element that he's one of them.

14. the growing split between Mormons and protestants.. |
|
western Mormons and southern Protestants are two groups which favor Republicans, but these two groups have never trusted each other! Mormons try to convert protestants to Romney by focusing on his support for "family values", while southern protestants attack Romney for being a Mormon cult member.
Mormons view Romney's run as an opportunity to bring more protestants into the Mormon church, while protestants fear Romney will only drive huge numbers of Catholics and protestants into the Democratic party. This could make the Republican primaries into nothing more than a religious bloodbath!

15. Anything that divides the opposition is |
|
a good thing. Repukes can't make it close enough to steal unless they are united. So far they have no prominent candidates the extreme rw feels comfortable with. Meantime Guiliani, McCain, and Romney are all running to the right pandering for those votes, and at some point it's going to get personal. Good.
