My letter to the Alliance for Retired Americans about repealing the junk program Medicare Part D
Hello

I definitely will not join AARP because they betrayed disabled and retired people supporting the junk medicare part D program.

However I remain undecided about joining your organization BECAUSE I spoke to Mrs. Porter in the government policy department today Feb 21, 2007 and it did not appear that ARA would mount any significant pressure on the Republicans and conservative and moderate Democrats in congress to get a repeal of Medicare Part D and enactment of a real prescription drug benefit covering 80 percent of medication placed in part B with no extra premiums, no extra deductibles, no means test and no coverage gap and no sign up penalties.

I suggested a boycott of the 3 major pharmacy chains Eckerd, CVS, and Walgreens, who by the way donate money to the republican party, in order to pressure them to go to the Republican party and get a real prescription drug benefit as I described, enacted in congress.

I have no where to go. I have no senior organization that reflects my wants and political action to get what I want, so my money remains in my wallet until I find such an organization.

With respect and disappointment,

1. I like this organization
Their platform on Medicare is:

The Alliance supports a strengthened Medicare program with expanded benefits including a meaningful prescription drug benefit; annual physical exams, dental health, eyeglasses, hearing aids and foot care; affordable home and community-based long term care; rehabilitative, nursing home and other vital services, and extended preventive services without co-payments.

The Alliance supports a prescription drug benefit under Medicare that is: universal, voluntary, affordable, not means-tested but particularly protects low and moderate income persons and those with high out-of-pocket costs, and which includes a system of cost control as well as strong maintenance of effort provisions covering employer provided retiree benefits. A Medicare plan must protect retirees who currently receive drug benefits from their former employers. The new Medicare law does not meet most of these criteria.

The Alliance opposes any premium support, voucher plan or undermining of federal administration of Medicare by turning it, or any part of it, over to insurance companies and other private sector plans.

I quit AARP over the Medicare bill and I won't ever rejoin. But the ARA has been pretty good. At least in my opinion.

2. ARA has good intentions but after 3 years attempting them to put pressure on the GOP
I have decided not to join ARA either until they stop playing nice with congress and instead use the buying power of their 3 million people and call these 3 pharmacies and make those pharmacies get congress to enact the prescription drug benefit that should have happened in the first place.

Perhaps you don't need the coverage but I do and no organization has gotten congress to do it yet.

For me for now I will not join the ARA until they get more militant.
