Dems Invade K Street

By: Jeff Patch
February 26, 2007 11:19 AM EST

A liberal outfit seeking to flex its power in the wake of the Democratic majority on Capitol Hill is trying to send a message by invading the confines of K Street.

The Campaign for America's Future, which mostly works to enact a progressive economic agenda, moved into office space recently along the thoroughfare, long intertwined with the lobbying and advocacy industry.

Robert Borosage, the organization's co-director, says the group negotiated a good deal on a ten-year lease for the office space on the fourth floor of 1825 K Street, but he relishes in the symbolic message sent in the move.

"We got a good price on the rent, so I don't want to pretend that we went out of our way to spend more money to be on K Street," he said, demurring on divulging the rent payment for the 15,000 square ft. office. "The irony was that there's this small beach head on K Street. The center of law firms and lobbyists is now becoming a progressive center."

The group is expanding to an office about twice the size of its old digs on Connecticut Avenue. They'll enjoy a larger conference room and offices but also lease out space to the Progressive Majority Political Action Committee and the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center.

They also join Americans United and US Action, already in the building. The campaign enlisted the services of a moving company to transport the Xerox machines, filing cabinets and personal effects of a staff of 29 people -- not including interns or contract staffers.

1. Oh just listen for the delicious sound
Listen for the hypocritical caterwauling of the Republicans, particularly the political operatives who made sure from the get-go of the Bush administration, that only True Believers would be given lobbying access to the corridors of power that they controlled so tightly. They will wail and gnash their teeth over the presence of CAF in their little playpen.

Keep an especial eye out for the media folks who carry the GOP's water for them.
