Brit Hume On Walter Reed: ‘It Looks Terrible’ For The Bush Administration, ‘Which Is The Problem’ «

This morning on Fox News Sunday, Brit Hume spoke about the Walter Reed scandal in entirely political terms, saying “the problem” is that it “looks terrible” for the administration.

Hume called the neglect and deplorable conditions at the military hospital a “potential” political firestorm, but said that the “administration did what it did to try to get it over with, and it may well have succeeded.”

Hume suggested that if Democrats had not taken control of Congress in November’s election, the Bush administration would not have demanded resignations from the Army Secretary and the chief of Walter Reed. “This is an administration which is known or had been known for sticking by people even when they were embattled.” Watch it at link.

NPR’s Mara Liasson responded to Hume’s comments: “I think, you know, to say it looks bad, it also is bad. Those pictures were horrible. These are people — nobody who is being treated for any kind of injury should have to live in that condition, let alone people who just fought in a war for our country.”

Transcript

HUME: I think it tells you a lot about the effect of the last election and the political atmosphere in Washington. This is an administration which is known or had been known for sticking by people even when they were embattled. The idea that conditions at Walter Reed hospital, a hospital that is on its way out of business, had deteriorated, that’s probably one of the reasons they wanted to put it out of business. This is unfortunate. It looks terrible, which is the problem. The problem is that it looks as if this administration, which has sent troops into harm’s way, is now neglecting them when they’re injured and need care and help. But make no mistake about it, this was a — there was a potential political firestorm on Capitol Hill began to brew about this. The administration did what it did to try to get it over with, and it may well have succeeded.

7. Neither do I
When I see "news" broadcasts (quite by accident) on other people's TV's, I'm invariably appalled. It's nothing but lies, opinions, B*shit admin. propaganda, and inane celebrity gossip. I haven't watched any TV for more than 20 years, and I don't feel that I've missed a thing.

4. "It looks terrible, which is the problem."
No, asshole, the PROBLEM is that our troops - you know, the ones you conservatives claim to support? - aren't getting the proper medical care. If it "looks" like this administration is neglecting our men and women in uniform, that's probably because that's what happening. And I'm sorry, but the conditions at Walter Reed are a hell of a lot more important than your "president's" stupid approval ratings. :grr:

The only "criticism" I would have is that they are "asswipes" - I don't even dignify them with being on par with an asshole...

An excellent argument for term limits for talking heads; the human element means nothing to people like this.

10. Anyone know what BushCo is doing with soldiers who return home addicted to hard drugs?
Are they throwing them out on the street, or are they housing them in moldy, rat infested "hospitals"?

14. It looks bad because it is bad DUH!!!!!
When we send our children of to an illegal war of aggression, at the very least we must give them the best health care possible. Not this BADMINISTRATION, they only respond to MEDIA COVERAGE. They fight their war in the press. If the control the media they win. When will America wake up and see these COWARDS for what they are, They're selling your children's lives for Haliburton Profits.

16. Support the troops! Damage control to the ER, STAT!
"On it's way out of business"? With apologists like Hume protecting the backs of the administration, military hospitals are anything but anachronisms - on the contrary, they're bursting at the seams.

17. The only scandal as far as Hume is concerned . . .
The only problem at Walter Reed is that it makes the Bush administration look terrible. He couldn't care less about the people being neglected or the deplorable conditions there; it's all about how it affects the political fortunes of the Elephant, which first last and always flies above the Eagle. Party considerations, for Hume and his ilk, always trump everything else.

But now that the administration has tried "to get it over with," it's all over. No more need to report on this non-story, is there? Let's all just let it go and focus on something else. Please?

You know what, Mr. Hume? Fuck you, that's what.

20. “This is an administration which is known or had been known for sticking by people even when
they were embattled." I dunno, the administration had no trouble firing a bunch of US Attorneys (all previously appointed by Bush and confirmed by Congress) for very suspect reasons. Not much loyalty there.
