Guess who offered General Wesley Clark a new job?

Traits of a visionary leader

Here's a hint: It's the same commonality that spurred Gov. Bob Riley to discuss with former Army general and possible Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark the prospects of accepting the top job at Auburn University.

The answer is government work, specifically employment at the highest levels of the federal government.

Before he was named to replace Donald Rumsfeld as defense secretary, Robert Gates was president of Texas A&M. Before moving to College Station, Texas, Gates worked in previous presidential administrations.

Sean O'Keefe left NASA as top administrator to become LSU's chancellor. Donna Shalala ended her tenure as a Cabinet secretary in the Clinton administration by becoming president of the University of Miami.

Why?

1. Ok... since I'm obviously the only one still awake at this wee hour...
I look at this as a HUGE MOMEMTUM for Clarkies--

I think he could be in the position and still campaign -- and from what the directions the others went, it seems like a good place to be employed when he announces--

And-- if he takes it, he'll be an EX-Faux Commentator!

Awesome!

2. I take this to mean that Wes Clark is not going to run for President
The job of president at any large university is a very demanding one, and if Clark were to accept the job offer, and if it is approved by the alumni board, it means that Clark won't run for Prez.

3. It's not the Governor's place to offer a university presidency.
It's the Commission of Higher Ed's responsibility, and they will only do this after a highly competetive, mandatory search process.

Clark won't accept. If he's planning on running for the US presidency, he won't accept a few-months-long presidency at a university. It wouldn't be fair to the university, because they'd have to go through the excrutiating search process again, to find a new president.

Sounds to me like Riley's pandering to the electorate, all the while stepping on the toes of the Higher Ed Commission--the ones who really hold the power (and final say) to hire university presidents.

Story dates back to August 26, 2006.

http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/news/060827/clark.shtml
Riley said Clark listened to his pitch about applying for the university post, but said the general declined to join a growing list of those wanting to lead the state's largest university.

I'm glad he turned it down!

Iraq and the rest of the world are a bigass mess! :(

5. Instead he chose to become a Fellow at Burkle Center......at UCLA,
the scene of his recent 2 day Nuclear Conference last week.

That way he can run and work.

Also, in reference to Faux.....As long as he continues to kick their ass and help win Red Districts like those we won in 2006......He can appear on Fox as much as he wants.

Those who fight to win, face the enemy on their turf whenever it is required. Period.

6. When I was at Auburn
One of my professors told us that a university president has to provide 3 things:

1. Winning sports teams for the alumni
2. Adequate parking for the faculty
3. Sex for the students

If you know much about Auburn, you can guess which one of the three was hardest to find.

9. Let's see, I know they USED to be in the SEC ........
But I can't for the life of me remember them actually fielding (decent) teams lately ....

Must be (c): Sex for the students?
