On Recapturing The Language Of Liberalism
Our conservative friends believe in the primacy of the corporation over the individual. They think that as long as they make life easy for multinational corporations, that somehow, magically, everything good will flow from corporate beneficence. Conservatives believe that we must venture into foreign lands and attempt to change their cultures and spend our national treasure in overseas deserts. Conservatives believe that, when it comes to some of the most private choices American families make, it is government that knows best.

But we’ve seen the reality of what happens when conservative policies are implemented. Rampant deficits, unstable markets, enormous trade deficits and the unprecedented outsourcing of corporate America, leaving behind a trail of broken and lost homes, broken hearts and broken bank accounts for middle class Americans.

Liberals offer a very different direction for America.

Liberals believe what John Kennedy and Franklin Roosevelt knew to be true. If you value people before you value corporations, America grows and thrives. Liberals believe in curtailing foreign adventurism and actually securing our border and our ports here at home. Liberals believe that fighting terrorism means we have to be strong and prepared and alert, not weak and scattered and deployed all around the world, taking care of every country except for America. Liberals believe that the chronic deficit spending of the conservative Republicans, every time they have been in power over the last thirty years, has left an economy exhausted and weak, virtually bankrupting the wallets and spirit of American families. Liberals believe that if the American people have to balance their own family budget, they have every right to expect their government to balance its budget, as well. Liberals value strong, real national security, an America that works in favor of the working man and woman, and a government that keeps its nose out of the private lives of American families. Liberals believe that families should make their own personal decisions for themselves, and not have big government make it for them.

Liberals believe, as they’ve always believed, in the future of America. They look forward with eager and excited expectation and optimism, not backwards, like our conservative friends often do, with regret and sad nostalgia.

Liberals founded this country, fought the good fight in the American Revolution, sought to preserve the Union, defied corporate monopolies, led this nation out of the great Depression and staunchly battled, in every generation, for the rights of all Americans to participate equally in the American dream.

Liberal ideology captures the very core of what it means to be an American: to believe in freedom, justice, equality and opportunity.

Go to Arlington National Cemetery and gaze upon the thousands and thousands of American heroes who fought so that we could continue the great, ever advancing, experiment of freedom.

Take a moment there and stand quietly in front of the grave of John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

The flame is still lit. And it is still strong.

4. They do not believe in corporate beneficence...that's the cover story...
They believe in every man for himself. They visualize themselves as rugged individualists who can "take care of themselves."

6. I think it's the other way around
Randian "rugged individualism" is used as a smokescreen for their real corporate agenda. And they fool the lower middle class over and over again, as illustrated beautifully by Thomas Frank.

5. we need to reclaim the word "liberal"
... which has been uttered with hissing disdain by the GOP for too long.

We need to say it loud and say it proud.
