Another RW church member points out "comparison" between WWII and Iraq.
Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 08:45 PM by Flabbergasted
Three years ago I overheard a conversation with a "real patriotic" RWinger and my pastor. BTW this guy is so Republican he named his first two girls Reagen and McKinley. So the conversation proceeds into....

"Ya know there were lots of "Insurgents" after Hitler was overthrown...(paraphrase)."

I butted in, "It was a substantially different scenario and group of people. Its like comparing apples and oranges."

....

This week the assistant pastor butts into my conversation with another conservative customer...

Customer. "We should be carpet bombing everyone affiliated with any suicide bomber in Iraq, but the left just can't accept what has to be done, and if we have to kill off Islam then we will. Just because the oil is under their soil doesn't mean we shouldn't have it."

Assistant Pastor. "Yeah, that's what they did to Germany."

Me. "Uh, there is a big difference between being attacked and defending yourself, and pre-emptive attacks against a country posing no threat."

Pastor. "Well thats what you have cafes for,to talk about Idealism."

I was shocked but he walked out the door a second later. I don't think I should bring this subject up again.

2. You'll ask why I joined. But they're really really nice, sharing, giving people.

It is a tiny Southern Baptist Church in Portland OR. I'm not sure why, but my wife and I fit in, with my long hair and all. There are more liberal members as well.

That comment came from a customer who I've known a long time. He's very intelligent. He knows alot about just about everything.

3. I thought churches weren't supposed to engage in politics or they'd lose
their tax exempt status. You ought to notify the IRS about this.

7. Lay people can discuss anything they want
The church as a body can't take stands on partisan politics. This was perfectly well within the IRS guidelines, however wacky the conversation was.

10. Yeah, I'm sure Jesus would say carpet bomb 'em.
He'd probably be for torture too. Crucifixion most likely.
