Poll question: Will Fred Thompson enter the 2008 Presidential race? |

(How hard would he be to beat?)

1. Not hard. No reason to run. If he weren't on Teevee, would GOPers |
|
even be talking about him? Rudy is still no. 1 on the threatdown list.

2. I noticed that Lou DobbSon called him "highly articulate"... |
|
on tonight's show. I can see he and Mona Charen are already praticing their GOP talking points in case he jumps in.

4. No better than Edwards, Hillary, or Obama--they're all lawyers, they're |
|
all pretty articulate--especially compared to Chimpy.

If Law & Order, which is way down in the ratings this season, is canceled, I'd say he will run. Or if Dick Wolf, the producer of the series, decides to fire all the old hands, he'll run. I really think it depends more upon what happens with the show than with politics.

5. If Rudy and McCain flounder |
|
Fred might jump in. The Repukes don't seem too thrilled with their current crop of candidates so if a space at the top opens up I can see Fred going for it.
How hard would he be to beat? America sure loves its celebrities, so my guess is that he would be a formiidable opponent. Doesn't matter where he stands on the issues. People will say, "He's that Law & Order guy" and that will be good enough.

6. You bet he will. He came in third in some little straw poll in Ohio ... |
|
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 07:04 PM by femmocrat
and he hasn't even announced.
He is the one repug that scares me, because he will be seen (by many) as the sucessor to Saint Ronnie.

7. Hopefully not, since he already polls well (tied with Hillary in a Ras poll) |
|
I want NEWT to get in the mix. He would be a much easier candidate for us to beat.

8. Thompson has a folksy demeanor |
|
that will cause trouble for Hillary if she's the nominee. She can't play the folksy role. Bill can, she can't.
Thompson will roll over her.

20. Thompson is one horse's patootie - he may be folksy enough but |
|
he has the charm of "a turd in a punch bowel." Yes, even Saint Reagan was a better actor. That's just damn sad. :P

12. If he does he will pick up support McCain might have preferred to have |
|
now. But time's ticking away. If Thompson waits too long he might find himself outflanked on all sides.
All the little Republicans want to be the party's nominee. But only one can. It isn't going to be easy for Fred Thompson to be the "obvious" alternative to the rest of the field, even if McCain fades quickly.
And the nutbag fundies would just as soon go for Brownback as Fred Thompson.

15. If I were you, I'll be more worried about Michael Bloomberg entering the race than Fred Thompson |
|
Bloomberg has $5 billion of his own money, a good chunk of which he could use to run as an independent. Lieberman will support him, if for no other reason but as payback for Bloomberg's support for Holy Joe against Ned Lamont.

16. Thompson is far more dangerous. |
|
You will see - he has that common touch, and the hint of being the "man's man" that will allure millions of white males to vote for him, especially if he is VP to Rudy. He will make it OKAY for Westerners and Southerners to vote for Rudy.
Bloomberg would never command that sort of popularity. He would be anemic in the West and the South. His millions could buy him the nomination but NOT the election.

but his past record in the Senate is typical of idiotic Republicans that never questioned Bush.

I am referring to those masses who can't name their own Senators or governor, but unfortunately have been trained to vote anyway. They will flock to him because he is on "real" TV and not on some pointy-headed show. Like Rudy he has the Reagan thing going. He is extremely dangerous as a candidate; on a ticket with Rudy, they would hand Hillary her head.

22. Thats what the pugs want. |
|
They want a conservative. One that is strong on immigration and conservative on spending.
Many pugs have a bad taste in their mouth in regards to Bush. Do you think the victory in the houses was due to the country wanting to be liberal? It wasn't, it was the country being tired of Bush and his disenfranchising his conservative base with his rampant spending, poor war performance, and immigration policy.
Thompson has the ability and the record to unite conservatives. Combine that with the conservative base getting fed up with the constant attacks on everything the President does and they will show up in force if someone unites them.
Giulliani won't unite them because of his abortion and gun views.

|
He's a fake. To anyone in the North, Rudy would actually be more likable, or at least more genuine. Rudy is gonna take the nom.

25. Conservatives will vote for Rudy just fine, if he's the nom--they do what they're told. |
|
And unfortunately, some Dems will too, because of his liberal social views. The neocons want to win--if they think Rudy's the guy to pull over some Dems, they'll run him. Dems won't vote for Thompson--he's Bush all over again, just in a smarter/better-spoken package. And I'm not convinced he'll run, anyway. He's being trotted out for a reason I haven't figured out yet. I just don't think Rudy is who we want as nominee. He beats our candidates in most polls.

This guy will make it okay for Western and Southern voters to vote for Rudy, if he is on the ticket with him. It is probably their strategy.
