Gonzales: Firings were justified

By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer
13 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - His job in jeopardy, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said
Thursday no impropriety was involved in the dismissal of eight federal
prosecutors and the decision was "justified and should stand."

Appearing before a plainly skeptical Senate Judiciary Committee, Gonzales
conceded that "reasonable people might disagree" with the decision. He said
the process by which the U.S. attorneys were dismissed was "nowhere near
as rigorous or structured as it should have been."

Offering an apology to the eight and their families, he also said he had
"never sought to mislead or deceive the Congress or the American people"
on that or any other matter.

"This is not a game of gotcha," said Specter. In a reflection of the stakes,
he told the attorney general he faces the equivalent of a "reconfirmation
hearing."

2. Uh, AP story is just that fiction since the hearing isn't even over yet
they've written the story before it's even done

"It's all part of a growing ongoing investigation into corruption in defense and intelligence contracts, which already has sent former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham to prison and, legal sources say, may threaten others in Congress and the CIA. "

I know that UPI is Moon and therefore CIA affiliated

but I wonder sometimes about AP

Gonzales faces skepticism from lawmakers

By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer
18 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - His job in jeopardy, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales
insisted Thursday he played only a small role in the dismissal of eight
federal prosecutors. Skeptical senators reacted with disbelief.

"We have to evaluate whether you are really being forthright," Sen. Arlen
Specter (news, bio, voting record) bluntly informed the nation's chief
law enforcement officer.

The Pennsylvania Republican said Gonzales' description was "significantly
if not totally at variance with the facts."

"Since you apparently knew very little about the performance about the
replaced United States attorneys, how can you testify that the judgment
ought to stand?" asked Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass.
