Why I Think Gonzalez Will Not Resign
If he goes voluntarily, Bush has two options:

1) Nominate a loyalist crony, who will be grilled and may be rejected,

2) Nominate someone who's not a crony, which is what he's supposed to do.

The big risk is that if Bush nominates someone who's truly respected and independent, he or she may decide to take their job seriously. After all, Bush hired Patrick Fitzgerald.

And with a truly independent person as head of DoJ, just imagine the potential damage. It would be like a role-reversal of the fox guarding the henhouse.

1. The Hen would now have an Uzi and the fox would be headed for the taxidermist.

4. He won't resign because he doesn't have to.
Bush won't fire him and he'll just sweat it out. Who cares if the Justice Department grinds to a halt for two years, starts bleeding staff, and lets thousands of criminals go free -- it's not like the Department has a "mission" or a "responsiblity" or anything.

5. You got it!
If Bush won't fire him (and Bush today stated that he was "pleased" with Gonzo's testimony) -- they will continue to circle the wagons and Gonzo will remain a part of the inner circle, giggling and thumbing their noses at all attempts to bring them to account.

Now that doesn't mean we can't bring them to account. But that's how they'll play it, no doubt.

6. True, but we can use that like a giant club. Or dick.
If the Republicans get nervous enough, they'll force it. If George still resists, panicky Republicans may well give us our impeachment. Whatever happens, we have to stress the impotence of an executive who can't bring himself to fire an incompetent employee.

Impotence. Impotence. Impotence. Stress it everywhere.

7. It's hard for me to imagine what would get enough 'Licans . . .
Into the impeachment camp. How much more does this administration have to do to outrage even them?

Remember that the Clinton impeachment was completely phony, and used up the "phony impeachment" ticket for a generation or more. This one would be real. And while I acknowledge that Bush is the most impeachment-worthy president of my lifetime (more of a dick than Dick, that's for sure!), I don't think anyone with the power to pull the levers has the appetite for impeachment, given that it would take most of Bush's remaining time in office to bring to completion.

Naaah, I'm afraid we're just going to have to endure two more years of this until he's forced out by time

8. Don't know if you were around for Watergate
I knew it was a GOP bag job from the beginning, and despaired several times of anything being done about it. But the GOP leaders finally came through and got the Trickster to resign. From "The Final Days" I recall that they got desperate in fear of their own political futures. I believe the it was said if impeachment were on the table, they would be screaming for the right to vote Nixon out of office. That was the news Barry and the others took to the WH.

9. As my own Senator Feingold said at a meeting near my city about impeachment:
'One thing Feingold expressed no enthusiasm for is impeaching President Bush.

“I don’t support impeachment, and I don’t support impeachment hearings, even though I think the president has probably committed an impeachable offense,” Feingold said in response to a question from Al Schulz of La Crosse.

“We are not required to impeach the president simply because he’s committed an impeachable offense, which I think he did with the illegal wiretapping. We have to decide whether it’s in the best interest of the country to go through that process.”'

I consider Senator Feingold to be one of our best senators and I am proud to have him represent me here in Wisconsin. He wants what is best for the country regardless of what he may personally want which is different from the attitude which so many have who scream for impeachment in spite of the fact that there would be no conviction in the Senate. Just because you can do something, it doesn't mean you should. Just because you really, really want something to happen, doesn't mean it will.

Democrats need to keep doing what they are doing, investigating and pummeling Bushco, turning over the rock of this administration and exposing it to the light of day. We need the help of Republicans in Congress to get things done. Plus, if you think you are going to elect a Democrat as president without the help of votes from Republicans and independents, then you should think about it some more.

10. The crony list seems to be getting narrrower
harriet Miers getting hounded out of the SCOTUS nomination was a sign of weakened hack support. He may pick a "unitary executive" fundamentalist that has no disqualifying baggage. This will get him through the last year. I think he is running out the clock.

12. Justice Stevens is 87 and Justice Ginsberg has had
a serious cancer. I sure hope they both survive for a few more years.

14. It is a testament to their dedication
that they have hung on. If we lose them our Supreme Court will come to resemble the Mullahs of Iran -- who can trump the will of any parlimentary moderates

13. Remember the Justice Dept is key in their plan on taking back Congress
and keeping the WH.

Gonzo is going nowhere unless someone forces him out. They need the Justice dept exactly the way it is otherwise many more GOPers would be going to jail. For one, the word was that there was at minimum over a dozen GOP congresscritters involved in Abramoff corruption.

They need to keep a tight rein on who they allow in to their GOP Justice club.
