Judge in Whitewater trials dies in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (Reuters) - Federal District Judge George Howard,
who came to national attention when he presided over the trials of President
Bill Clinton's business partners in the Whitewater investigations, died on
Saturday at his home in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He was 82.

In 1996 Howard heard the trial of Jim McDougal and his former wife, Susan,
and Gov. Jim Guy Tucker of Arkansas, who were accused of fraud and
conspiracy in connection with a real estate investment in which Clinton his
wife, Hillary, had been partners.

Howard became the first black federal judge in Arkansas when he was
appointed to the bench in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter.
