I am so upset about this. I have been learning about how organic farming has become big business and is acting like it. There has been an amendment sponsored by the ironically named Organic Trade Association that allows synthetic food additives to be used, including 500 substances in organic foods without any public review. It would also allow calves to be raised on antibiotics and genetically engineered feeds, etc. before they are converted to organic use. This is just WRONG. We are not rich people. Every dollar we make is important to us. But my kids are more important, so I buy organic whenever possible. It really PISSES me off to think that I could be paying a premium for food for my family that isn't much better than I could get a lot cheaper at Walmart.

1. Right but...
now products are becoming more specific in the labeling. Like no "artificial hormones", or "steroids".

"As passed, the amendment sponsored by the Organic Trade Association allows: Numerous synthetic food additives and processing aids, including over 500 food contact substances, to be used in organic foods without public review . Young dairy cows to continue to be treated with antibiotics and fed genetically engineered feed prior to being converted to organic production. Loopholes under which non-organic ingredients could be substituted for organic ingredients without any notification of the public based on "emergency decrees." OCA will work to reverse this rider with an "Organic Restoration Act" in Congress in 2006."

4. I have used Horizon milk thinking that the cows were living this great life
and I have read on this website that they are part of what they call The Shameless Seven. They are apparently not exactly raising those happy cows they want everybody to believe they are.

5. No milk cow lives as long or as happily as a non-milk cow. But I do believe some dairies
treat their cows better than other dairies. I always buy organic milk. It's not as good as going completely non-dairy, but it's an attempt anyway to do the lesser of however many evils. If people knew what goes in in factory farms, we'd all be vegetarians. I turned veggie about 3 years ago, and I don't miss meat one bit.
