Carol Moseley Braun attacked, injured on South Side
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-070428braun-story,1,4057590.story?coll=chi-news-hed

Two University of Chicago students were credited with thwarting a robbery attempt of former U.S. Senator Carol Moseley Braun on the South Side Friday night.

Braun was attacked and injured shortly before midnight outside her Hyde Park home in the 1200 block of E. 56th St., according to police and eyewitnesses.

Rachel McFadden, 19, and Zachary Trayes-Gibson, 21, both biology students, were heading to a party when they heard a woman scream. McFadden rushed to Braun's aid and Trayes-Gibson chased the would-be robber away.

"We just looked at each other and started running toward her," McFadden recalled Saturday, hours after the couple helped Braun survive what police described as an attempted robbery. "There were no second thoughts."

Braun, the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Senate and one-time presidential hopeful, had just returned from downtown where she had seen the play "Wicked" with a family member.

Get well Senator and thank you to the two young heroes who came to your aid!

1. I think the Senator just found herself a couple of bodyguards
Seriously, how badly is Braun hurt? Did that asshat club or punch her at all?

5. She broke her left wrist when she fell
I imagine she is sore. Hopefully the broken wrist which is nasty enough is the extent of her injuries. As I said before, best wishes for a quick recovery. CNN did mention she held on to her purse and that she had fought back. I know she's a brave lady and she would fight back if possible.

9. "real life heros - not just nerds"
"...you are very very cool for a couple of biology students!"

What the hell is that supposed to mean? That people who study the various natural sciences are implicitly "not cool"? That they are like as not "nerds"?

Wow. You just made my head explode a little. If this was an attempt at humor, you've failed, and miserably so.

17. Yes, scientists are implicitly "not cool".

The nerdy scientist or bookworm meme has been in existence since at least the 1950s. It may pre-date that era for all I know. If you truly failed to notice this..., then you just might be a nerd.

6. I'm glad all that happened was a broken wrist
The man, clad in dark clothing, tried to steal her purse, and in the ensuing struggle she apparently fell to the ground and broke her left wrist. She was taken to Northwestern University Hospital, where she was treated and released.

While McFadden helped her off the ground and dialed 911, Trayes-Gibson chased the man down the street. He said the man eventually ducked behind some cars, before coming out brandishing a weapon. He at first thought it was a gun until the blade flashed in the glow of the street lights.

Trayes-Gibson backed away from the man, who didn't say a word. He said the man slid into a dark green sports-utility vehicle parked nearby and sped away.

I love Carol! I wish she was running again... My My AfricanAmericanWoman.. HooBoy....

I hope this will step up the patrols in her neighborhood.

14. Here's to a quick recovery!
I voted for her in the primary in March 1992. That was the first time I ever voted. Wow, that was 15 years ago.
