Poll question: I'd love to know what DU'ers favorite candidate is right up to the min
My friend asked me who DU seems to back, I said I really didn't know, I knew it was one of four probably, but please, DU this poll! :)
I won't say who I'm behind, I'll just vote to not persuade.

Who are you behind right now?

12. Well even though
This poll is completely unscientific with a self selected tiny sample size and a huge margin of error....

.....I still can't quite help being pleased by strong early support for my guy Bill Richardson. Probably not the favorite son of the ultra-progressive types but the best combination of experience, leadership and policy astuteness IMO.

And remember, even if you don't like it being this way - centrists decide elections. 40% will always go Dem. 40% will always go Rep (may be shrinking now though :) ) It's the 20% in the middle we fight over. Who better than Richardson to get moderates on our side over a Giuliani or McCain?

14. So was the guy who gave us 8 years of peace and prosperity
If he's the nominee (slim chance, but HRC is OK with the DP too, and much greater chance there) your choice will be between two "pro death penalty ghouls". Just that the other one will also probably be anti choice, anti gay rights, pro-war, and get to nominate conservative jurists.

Which one would you want?

I know the inisght is far from new, and the disagreement far from unique, but as a pragmatist, the willingness of the purity-standard voters to see far more harm caused overall rather than compromise on one issue is always strange to me. If enough people thought like you, who would otherwise vote for the Dem but can't because of IWR vote, DP support, NAFTA support or whatever other litmus tests they may have, they will guarantee a president who disagrees with them not only on those issues but on all others too.

Again, nothing new, but those who would argue against gaining a million dollars but taking a punch in the face, when the alternative is not to avoid both to be lose both the million dollars (the good that a Dem pres. could do) AND get beaten and kicked from head to toe (the much greater harm a Rep pres. will do) are beyond my comprehension. I'm sure the same is true in reverse of course, and that the purists will never understand those who would "sell our principles" or some such.

19. great post
I do not like the death penalty either, but when all the other issues are in our favor, it's a good thing, we can't get a perfect candidate that we all agree on. I fully understand the other DU'ers point, b/c if any of the Dem Candidates were anti gay rights, I'd be very against them. So, to each his own, but still a nice thought out post.

17. My heart says Clinton, my head says Edwards.

Rationally, I think that of the three main candidates, John Edwards is the one who would make the best president; I don't think there's much between them in terms of electability.

On the other hand, I can't supress a sneaking hope that Clinton wins, due to the generally low quality - shrill, angry, poorly-reasoned, and accurately termed "bashing" - of many of the posts attacking her on DU. But "the enemy of my enemy must be my friend" is not a sound strategy, I think - of the main three, she is probably the least left-wing, and I think would make the least good president, probably.

GREAT support for Dennis on DU. And surprising hold my breath votes for Clark. I am very suprised also by my choice, Edwards having a decent lead over Obama and Clinton. I guess it's the pro-poor/health care/send the Iraq bill back agenda? I love Clark, but I figure he's not coming to the party to dance?

Anyhow, thanks everyone for voting. GO DEMOCRATIC PARTY!

Edited on Sun May-06-07 12:10 AM by Blue_In_AK
...although he didn't dazzle me as much as I wanted him to in the debate. I'm really not thrilled to death about any of them at this point. I definitely appreciate Gravel's spunk -- always have -- but I don't think he's really presidential material. I would have supported Kerry wholeheartedly again, and I would be pleased to support Gore or Clark, but these others -- I don't know.

ed. Oops, I meant to put this at the bottom.

I have a feeling someone will tell him even a progessive website like DU picked him over Kucinich, Obama and Edwards... we'll see. I wish both he and Clark would enter, would make it interesting and we'd surely get the most viable candidate out of them to guarantee a Clintonesque 96 win.

27. Richardson unless Gore gets in.
I could say I'm waiting for Gore but as a realist I'm going to look at the available options and pick the guy who has the best all around experience and who I can agree with on most issues.

I like his stance on the Iraq War and he's not bogged down with a vote for the IWR, he's good on the environment and energy, His views on trade have evolved over the years to something I can live with and he's been pretty pro-labor as governor despite his centrist leanings. I don't agree with but can live with his views on guns and the death penalty and can see where these would play well politically in the west and south.

If Gore gets in, of course, all bets are off.

33. I like Obama some
what makes you more of a moderate, if you don't mind telling? I am a Christian, who is gay who believes two people should be allowed to join legally by law to receive the same benefits as others ('marriage' is decided by your church or other religious affiliation), who is against the death penalty, for gun control rules being followed constantly, for enforcing border security, protecting workers rights even if it seems harsh to business owners, and for abortion to be fully legal after counseling to determine if the woman would like to give the child up for adoption, as I don't think abortion is a good idea if it can be prevented, but understand there are times when a woman must have it done w/o question (rape, incest) if they wish, I believe we should be out of the middle east (including not backing Israel so much at the expense of the Palestinians), and highly against the illegal invasion of Iraq, I am also against open drug use, but am fully for anyone with medical conditions receiving medical marijuana (like MS/cancer patients). I consider myself moderate but open minded.
Love to hear your views...

35. Well, I'm a lot like you
I agree with a lot of what you posted. I'm still wavering on the death penalty, b/c while I want the process to be much more open (lots more DNA testing), I believe people like Ted Bundy should be put down.

I'm pro 2nd amendment. I think we just need to enforce the laws we have, we don't need more (and that goes with a lot more than just guns).

I'm pro-choice, including what you said. I believe that 3rd trimester abortions should be limited to only when medically necessary (including a woman's future fertility), not that I think they're happening just for fun.

I haven't fully decided where I stand on the Israel/Palestine situtation. I've read a lot, and discussed it a lot, but haven't decided.

I totally agree with you on gay marriage. I'm for equal rights for everyone.

I'm also for fiscal responsibility. I don't like the way spending in this country is going, but I'm not for repealing the tax cuts.

But I think the most important thing to me is: I'm open to everyone's views. I don't think people are stupid or ignorant if they don't agree with me. I think if we toned down the rhetoric and actually started talking a lot of our "problems" could be solved (meaning cultural issues).

After I read Obama's books, I really felt that he could represent me well. I don't agree with him 100%, but seriously, no one out there is gonna. But while I like Obama, it's not like I've disregared the other candidates and their messages either (nor do I hate them).

Neither Gore nor Clark are going to enter the race. The only place I even read about Clark, for example, is on these forums. So, according to DU, the leading candidates are: Kucinich and two guys who are not running for president. OK.
