Edwards to meet with Smithfield workers
News & Observer
W€ednesdya, June 20, 2007----
Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards plans to meet Thursday with workers who are trying to organize a union at Smithfield Foods.
The former U.S. senator will meet privately with the workers to support their effort to organize, according to a news release issued by his campaign. Edwards plans to discuss their struggles and the importance of protecting workers' right to organize, the news release said.
Afterward, Edwards plans to talk with reporters outside his campaign headquarters on Market Street in Chapel Hill.
Edwards has actively courted labor leaders in his campaign. Smithfield, whose pork slaughterhouse in Bladen County is the world's largest, has faced criticism about working conditions.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union has been trying to organize workers at the plant for several years.
