Heartfelt piece of advice to Dean supporters |
|
Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 12:02 PM by WilliamPitt
If Dean loses in Wisconsin and doesn't drop out, watching television will be a brutal experience for Dean supporters.
It has been hard to avoid the number of nails these CNN guys have pounded into Dean's coffin after every primary. They're really enjoying themselves. I mean, the glee on their faces has been both awesome and terrible to behold.
But because Dean (mistakenly, imho) stated he'd be gone if he didn't win WI, and then backed away from that statement, the TV guys will literally be howling like monkeys. It will be an unrestrained savaging.
My advice to Dean backers: Shoot your television on Monday night. You want no part of that.

whole story right now, there will be much anger that will need someplace to go.
The anger over "Selection 2000" and the "Iraq Invasion" which Dean expressed, and the alliance with Gore means that a wing of the party has been silenced for now. Gore has been, in effect, trashed twice by his party and those of us who saw the possibilty of change have been routed. My sense is that will come back around in ways we don't know yet to haunt our Party. It will come back to bite.
Edited for redundancy.

6. Let's not assume Dean loses. He needs to stay in the race because I'm... |
|
afraid it looks like Kerry might be going down in flames. Somebody needs to be there to pick up the pieces and that somebody needs to be Gov. Dean.
About the TV part, I think the talking heads are finding it pretty boring without Dean and will get more boring if time goes on without him - which will hurt their ratings. So for all their bally-hoo, I think in the long run they might be for Dean.
Actually, on second thought, I may be wrong on that. The press might have month's of fun with the story of "Kerry and the Intern".

Are the ones that talked him into staying in after Wisconsin. He is abiding by his special interests wishes that he not give up. If we want to have any chance at changing things we have to stay the course, there is NO way it will happen if we just quit.

Will, I agree with you, and thanks for the sentiments. I have been a Dean supporter. You mentioned CNN. Even worse are the creeps on Fox News and MSNBC. (Everyone fails to mention MSNBC in railing against CNN and Fox.)
I would rather support almost any one of the Democratic candidates over the one who will presumably be the nominee.

..but I think I feel worse for Kerry supporters right now. Dean's in second place.. why exactly would he drop out? I'm not moving out of the way for King Kerry's procession to the nomination. I'm enjoying this week, watching the stupid marketing phrase "electability" get its ass kicked by sex scandal rumors. I'm wondering how those people feel.. the ones that voted their second choice in Kerry, because he was oh-so "electable". Now they realize, what I've been saying all along. Electabilty it a myth. It's a DLC created buzz word. It's meaningless, because you never know what could be hiding around any corner.. a rumor, a fact, an innuendo. I applaud those that voted with their heart so far, and those that will continue to do so. The time to vote for electability is AFTER we have a nominee, in the general election. All it is now is trying to predict the general election.

did the rumors kick Kerry's ass?
He did pretty well in two caucuses yesterday, didn't he? Well... more than pretty well - ran away with them.
The rumor has gotten 100 times more play here on DU than anywhere else. That's disgusting.

Should he get out too because his presence will upset the kerry applecart.
Personally, I'd like to see both of them (and Sharpton) take it all the way to the convention, and use their delegates and presence as a constant "reminder" to the pooh-bahs that they cannnot take the conserns these candidates represent for granted.
Let's have a good old political convention that really is a convention, not a coronation of Kerry and the DLC.

Personally, I think that had Kerry been in Dean's position the same thing would have happened....oh wait...it did already...
Remember Kerry was the front runner first...and what did the media do to him?
My response has nothing to do with how Dean has been treated by the media and everything to do with how he was treated on this forum...

more people agree with you than you think. It's not you & Dean against the world. Just that the minority of loudmouths get all the attention on DU - or any other internet forum, for that matter. All I'm saying is that most people mean what they say here. It sucks that a pack of troublemakers have made people suspicious of any sincerity, support & sympathy that crosses the silly lines we've drawn here. Democrats first. Candidates second.

I think you are right, they probably will be merciless to Dean. I'm not going to shoot the TV though, I'll probably just watch CSPAN or CSPAN2. It depends which one has the election coverage on it. Yes, I know the callers can be obnoxious, but not as much as the people on the news networks.

he was going to drop out after WI. I received the original email which the media spun to imply that he would drop out if he didn't win WI. That's not the way I read the email at all. I'm already too aware of the media spin and bias to be surprised by ANYTHING AT ALL they choose to pull. That's why I hardly ever watch tv to begin with. I don't own one. I'll have to save that bullet for something else.
Shoot your television on Monday night. ps I suppose you meant "Tuesday" night ...

Will tried to tell us Clark supporters last Tuesday night to step away from the TV but did I listen? No. I watched all the pundits watch his speech that night with baited breath and anticipatory glee. (For god's sake, they even cut away from KERRY to go to the Clark's speech they were soooo excited to see him go.) And when he didn't give them what they wanted, they started the hunt for SOMEONE in the Clark campaign to confirm he was dropping out. And the same media that couldn't find their ass with both hands became true 'newshounds' and did not give up the hunt until the quarry was found.
It was painful and sad and maddening but I watched it all. Probably because I thought I needed to be there for Clark until the bitter end. And the Dean supporters will probably feel the same way.

Pitt insinuates that if Dean loses Wisconsin, then the media is going to have a field day with it. Makes sense, doesn't it? I mean, Dean supporters here have been kvetching about coverage of the candidate since day one.
Pitt's remarks came off as "I sympathize with you guys, it's gonna be ugly" and you grill him for it. That's kind of over-the-top, don't you think?
