Friday and Saturday, it was stated on the TV news here in the UK, that in doing such and such, Gordon Brown has been seen by many commentators as distancing himself from the American President, George Bush - particualrly with regard to the Iraq war.
I can't remember Friday's bulletin, but on Saturday, his distancing himself was apparently extrapolated from some rapprochement with the EU he had undertaken on an issue that clearly impacted on said UK/US relations.
On both occcasions, however, the newscaster immediately followed up by stating that, when questioned on the issue, the Prime Minister had given the most adamant of assurances that, under his aegis as Prime Minister, Britain's relations with the US, remained as close and staunch as ever; to suggest otherwsie ws plain wrong. That sort of thing!
