Subpoenas, contempt, and executive privilege
We're heading for a constitutional crisis. Everything you need to know is here and here.
Bush administration officials unveiled a bold new assertion of executive authority yesterday in the dispute over the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, saying that the Justice Department will never be allowed to pursue contempt charges initiated by Congress against White House officials once the president has invoked executive privilege.
Under federal law, a statutory contempt citation by the House or Senate must be submitted to the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, "whose duty it shall be to bring the matter before the grand jury for its action."

3. The House can also try people, itself
although it was last done about 70 years ago, a case of bribery if my failing memory serves.

That function of the House has never been removed. They can haul Miers in and try her themselves if the Fed. attorney fails like we expect him to.

In any case, that biddy belongs in jail until she gets over her misplaced hero worship and starts to sing.

4. This is hardly a crisis.
The Dems have the power to impeach and remove from office the Attorney General if he does not comply and the President for abusing his power to obstruct a Congressional investigation. It won't happen for political reasons, but they do have the power to do it.

I wish people would quit equating Congressional pusillanimity with a Constitutional crisis.
