A non-profit org (the way county, state, and national charities operate).
Edited to add: one of those groups that some call 'special interests.'

2. He just wants to sound out his supporters before buying new Levis |

personally, I think he should stick with the flannel lining, since it tends to get a little chilly in Vermont.

3. AFAIK, 527 is a move-on style organization.... |
|
...while 501(c)3 is a non-profit in general...

12. IIRC, 501 (c) 3 orgs can't be political |
|
It's been several years since I was involved in this sort of thing -- but I'm pretty sure that a 501(c)3 non-profit cannot donate to political causes or operate in any way politically.
A 527, OTOH, is a political org.

a 501(c)(3) is a non-profit organization that has to be nonpartisan. I work for one. It is NOT a PAC.
We can work on voter education and registration, but only in a nonpartisan way. Of course we're known as a "progressive" organization, so that does weed some out. ;-)

I've been thinking that Dean's people can continue on supporting various Dems. I donated to someone running in Iowa through a link on Dean's site. It would be great if he could coordinate fights to get rid of DeLay et al. I'd contribute to a site that would do that.
I hope that's what this means. Huge numbers of small contributions are the best way to beat the machine that's been dismantling our democracy, imho.

...I first became familiar with the Dean campaign when I went to a conference about getting rid of Bush. There were lots and lots of Dean people there. All of the local Dean people I know are registering people to vote, helping local candidates, educating people about Bush, etc.

6. a 501(c)(3) is a charity - a 527 is a PAC... |
|
A charity can't run political commercials or transfer money to political campaigns. I think they're still allowed to do get out the vote efforts.
The Red Cross, YMCA, churches, and private schools are often 501(c)(3)'s.
527's are moveon.org, unions, and other special interest groups. Their money can go to political campaigns and they generally serve as lobbying organizations.

10. I understand a 527 is up already and a PAC to fund political races is in |
|
the works as well.
The Dean people are moving to effect political change well beyond this presidential race.
