Sen. Hillary Clinton, Obama's chief rival for the Democratic nomination, and others responded by saying that anything that looks like pandering to dictators is bad politics.

"That's not what people are saying. That's what some of the pundits are saying," Obama said. "This notion that we should be afraid to talk to anybody makes no sense. They don't score a propaganda coup as long as we know who we are and we address clearly and forthrightly what our values are, what our ideals are and what our national security interests are."

Obama said he believes that avoiding discussions with some leaders sends a negative message.

"We get a reputation for arrogance that is actually diminishing our standing in the world and making it harder to fight the war on terrorism," Obama said.

1. I still don't understand why his answer is considered a flap
I thought Obama's points in the debate were eloquently phrased... And not only that-- he's right! Imagine JFK attempting to resolve the Cuban Missile Crisis without having spoken to Kruschev...

2. Indeed. It's silly to contest his position and it's a fight Hillary did not need to pick...
and surely wishes she hadn't.
