Edited on Mon Aug-06-07 11:27 AM by Frustratedlady
Breaking News from ABCNEWS.com:

A COAL MINE IN CENTRAL UTAH COLLAPSED AFTER A 4.0 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE, TRAPPING SIX MINERS, THE AP REPORTS

Rescue workers are on scene trying to locate six miners that are unaccounted for," the sheriff's office.

Rocky Mountain Power, a utility with a power plant in the area, sent a rescue team and heavy equipment to the mine, about 140 miles south of Salt Lake City, spokesman Dave Eskelsen said.

A command center was being set up in Huntington, about 15 miles from the mine, said Teresa Behunin, an accountant with Utah American Energy, which owns the mine. She had no other details.

1. I read that global warming with increase earthquakes
since the tectonic plates are not being compressed as much from the weight of ice packs above them.

Isn't that where the big nuclear power proponents want to store spent fuel rods?

Here is a good page for quakes:

http://www.iris.edu/seismon/

edited to add more info on quake location:

06-AUG-2007 05:59:45 37.81 -114.43 4.1 5.0 SOUTHERN NEVADA

With the rough info from Google Earth, quake was about 118 miles from Yucca Flats area.

Hope the coal miners get out OK and hope people realize spent fuel rods are dangerous in a quake zone. We need to get serious about solar and wind power.

3. I would imagine that this was a real rough ride....
even though it only measured a 4.0....it was only 3/10ths of a mile under ground(1656 ft)...the closer they are to the surface, the more violent they are...to be in a mine when that was happening, would be horrifying...I hope they find the guys and that they are ok...but....wb
