LGBT DUers and anyone else interested: Debate Thursday!
August 9, Thursday, Clinton, Edwards, Kucinich, Obama, and Richardson will debate before an LGBT audience. Live streaming video will be available. Here's an excerpt from www.logoonline.com:

"The forum, which will take place in Los Angeles, will be broadcast on LGBT television network LOGO at 9:00 pm ET (6:00 pm PT) and through live streaming video on our blog site VisibleVote08.com. LOGO is the owner of 365Gay.com.

"The forum also will be archived at VisibleVote08.com so that people unable to watch it live can still see it.

Asking questions of the candidates will be a panel comprised of journalists Jonathan Capehart and Margaret Carlson, musician/activist Melissa Etheridge and Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solomonese."

19. I wonder if CBS might eventually carry it
LOGO has CBS news breaks on it (my sister has it on her cable system so I have watched it a little). I intend to watch it online but this might be the final straw for my cable company. I get somethig like a billion religious stations and despite repeated calls and letters no logo.

31. i just have basic cable service -- so no logo -- but you're right
about countless religious stations -- and home shopping networks -- which are also usless to me.

AND i don't get c-span 3.

it's really aggravating.

and thus get all the channels offered by my cable company (except the premium ones) and mine won't carry LOGO. I can't get it at all no matter what package I spring for.

37. I am presuming so
I can't get a straight answer so to speak. I really like the internet service they provide but am considering cancelling my account with them and getting dish tv over just this one channel. What really pisses me off is that my brother in law and sister have the same cable company and get the channel.

I'm going to a gay bar here in Chicago that will be showing the debate...the HRC is sponsoring it.

Did you read about the details of this...apparently the candidates won't be sharing the stage.

Neverthess, it should be interesting! Thanks for posting about this.

4. No kidding? Each one alone in the hot seat?
I wonder how much time per questions each one will get. I guess that makes it a forum, not a debate.

6. Apparently, each candidate will get 15 minutes.
Edited on Wed Aug-08-07 06:32 PM by terrya
They'll appear sequentially...each will get 15 minutes, answering various questions.

No...technically, it won't be a debate...like you said, more of a forum.

But I have to congratulate all of the Democratic candidates who are participating. The same people who are sponsoring this asked the Republican candidates if they wanted to appear in a LGBT debate...and guess what the reaction was? :-)

8. This is what one of the executives said
"We went to the Republican candidates. We had decided that we only wanted to do this if two of the three frontrunners from either party agreed to participate. Obama and Clinton both said yes right away. Romney declined, and Giuliani and McCain never got back to us. So it became a Democratic forum,” Fisher said.

10. Giuliani is a chickenshit.
Allegedly, he has a semi-decent record (for a Republican) on GLBT rights. But I guess he's now in full backpedal mode. Sad.

I am so happy that they are archiving it for those of us who will most likely miss it. I can't wait until I get in and can read what everyone says. It is about damned time. This will really open up some issues that need to be discussed.

Thanks for the reminder.

From www.365gay.com:

"Visitors to VisibleVote08.com, the Forum’s website, can watch the forum live, read posts from celebrity and activist bloggers, and comment before, during, and after the forum."

20. This debate could make or break Hillary for me.
I desperately want a commitment from her that she won't do the same thing her husband did to us.

Here is the question I want asked of her.

Question: "I have a comment, a question and depending on your answer a follow up. First my comment. I would like to thank you for the work you've done for most of your professional life, championing the cause of women throughout the country. You have been a strong voice on the human rights of women and children, and like you I am waging a similar battle. My human rights are under direct assault. As a Gay American I would like to ask you a simple yes or no question. If you are elected president, will you stand up for my human rights?"

If she attempts to be evasive or not answer directly, I would interrupt and remind her that I asked a simple yes or no question, and point out that I have a follow up depending on the answer. I want a yes or no to come from her lips. If she says no then I have no need for a follow up. If she says yes, then I will ask the following.

Follow-up: "Thank you, now I have my follow up. Your husband signed into law two pieces of legislation that were designed to make me a second class citizen. He informed John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election that he should campaign against my human rights. If you become President of the United States, will you repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act? Will you repeal these pieces of legislation that your husband signed into law? This is also a simple yes or no question."

I posted it in the "Questions for the candidates --- Post yours!" thread. Link: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3437331&mesg_id=3437331

29. It won't change how I'll vote in the primaries, but in the generals.
If she flat out says no to the first question, then all bets are off the table. I don't anticipate that though. The follow-up is where I expect the real answer, because it is a test to see if she defends DOMA and DADT. If she says yes to the first question, and then defends her husbands policies, that not only makes her a liar but a hypocrite as well.

My goal with the question is simple. I want a straight answer. A simple yes or no. LGBT Americans deserve honesty, and Hillary uses the tactic of triangulation. I don't want to give her any room to evade the question. Either you are willing to give your support to the cause or not, there is no room for a third way.

Hillary is obviously my main concern, simply for the fact I know her husbands stance on the issue. I know that a few days ago Hillary called DOMA a good "strategic move." It boiled my blood that someone is actually willing to sell my human rights down the river because they find it strategically beneficial. I want - no I demand - a President who will fight for me.

In my eyes, if a candidate is willing to capitulate on human rights for Gay Americans, then how can we trust them on other issues? How can we trust them to do the right thing when it comes to trade deals, fighting to save the Bill of Rights and to stand up against enemies abroad when they aren't even willing to stand up against our enemies here at home?

The question, really, goes far beyond gay rights and goes into the basic fundamentals of every candidate. Trust. Can I trust that you will represent me and do the right thing when the time comes? That, like my question and its follow up, is a simple yes or no answer.

Right now, I do not trust Hillary. I submitted my question because I want to give her the chance to change my mind, and based on how she answers my question will determine the amount of support she gets from me in the general election. Despite what you might believe, I WANT her to change my mind.

25. What I like about this debate
is that each candidate will have more time to answer questions on LGBT issues. I'm sure, or I hope, there will be follow-up questions when a candidate tries to evade, so that her or his position can be nailed down.

I have a feeling that the streaming feed will be overloaded since almost no one gets Logo as a TV channel, and the vast majority of viewers will be over the net. Does anyone know if there's a backup of some kind?
