Reporter apologizes after cheering Rove's departure; blames bloggers
Edited on Sat Aug-18-07 07:55 PM by antiimperialist
You have to read this pathetic apology by this Seattle Times reporter (Nicole Brodeur). She embodies the typical timid press corps in our country.
When the Seattle Times staff met to discuss the news of Karl Rove's departure from his job, she cheered, because she believes Rove is a dangerous man.
But today she cites Rush Limbaugh's radio sohw among those who influenced her decision to apologize. (Yes, the same Limbaugh who once told a black caller to his show to "take that bone off your nose and call me back".
She now says that blogs are the ones who should act this way. She vows never to do it again.

Just read this excerpt:
The hallowed halls of journalism that I was privileged to enter more than 20 years ago are looking more and more like the New York subway. The walls covered in bloggers' scrawl, the platform crowded with any yahoo with a camera and an open mike. All are headed to your computer screen or television for the 15 seconds you'll give them before moving on to the next hot spot.

You may email her at nbrodeur@seattletimes.com

3. Why should anyone apologize for being glad a bad political
operative has left, and has hopefully left some room for a person with any scruples? Maybe some one can replace him who cares about this country and our Constitution.
It is not necessary for anyone who cares about honest US democracy to apologize for the expression of relief at the departure of such a conscienceless character as Karl Rove. Can't reporters have any delight in Democracy removing the pillow of corruption from her mouth to catch a breath?

10. It is hard to envision a more dishonest post
Here are her actual words.

The reaction to this bit of national news made national news, kicking off a Web-based debate about whether journalists should bring their personal views to the office. In the beginning, the Times' own David Postman and The Stranger's blog weighed in. By Thursday, The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz was calling the episode an "embarrassment." Rove himself laughed about it on Rush Limbaugh's radio show.

The last sentence of that paragraph is her sole reference to Limbaugh. Nothing else. Nowhere does she say Limbaugh made me apologize, nor does she attribute her decision to his thoughts, words, or actions. She instead mentions her coworkers as being the reason she apologized.

12. She quoted Rove's reaction on Rush Limbaugh
This obviously influence her decision. She should have noted that Limgaugh's show is racist and Rove should have chosen another outlet, not the show where the host once suggested that Michael J. Fox was exaggerating his illness.

14. No she didn't
She mentioned he was there and characterized it in one sentence. To say she decided to do this because of Limbaugh, which is what you said BTW, is categorically false. At most it was a tiny factor and was clearly mentioned to show how famous the meeting had evidently become.

11. I just sent her a short e-mail that said she should be proud that
she stood up to this imperial regime and one of its most disgusting architects. I get the impression she was pressured into this. She should not have caved in.

16. Where did this misguided idea come from that journalists aren't allowed to have opinions?
They're supposed to keep them out of their reportage, that's all. Cheering at a staff meeting is not the same as doing it at a press conference or exulting in an objective (non-OpEd) article. Jeebus, whatta buncha pathetic weenies they've become!
