2. Why
Why are they America's couple?

Seems to me they have a marriage of convenience and power.

4. How do you know what type of marriage they have? I've seen them both
together in a realatively casual setting and they seem very happy with each other.

And neither do you.

Exactly what setting did you see them in where it was "relatively casual?"

Just stating that I have no actual knowledge of their marriage. And neither do any of us. But we all express our opinions of it. So indulge me in my opinion that I think they have a long-standing agreement to remain married because it benefits them both.

Always found it a little strange why more women didn't reject Bill after his known philandering came to light. Maybe on some unconscious level, women still love the bad boy. :)

19. Maybe so, but
I assume that most extremely powerful men (and women) 'philander'. Bill's philandering didn't just 'come to light.' It was HOUNDED into light. His actions with another consenting adult (young though she was) was nobody's business but his, hers, and Hillary's.

Actually, I think Bill is sexy because he's so damned SMART. Oh, what I'd give now for a smart president!

Some may have been attracted to power. Some to his charisma and charm. Some were just plain turned on by him. I'm in the second category. I will always listen when he speaks because I've never heard anybody express himself so beautifully.

104. Not I.
My biggest problem with Hillary is that she didn't kick his sorry ass to the curb. When I caught my ex cheating, I did just that - with no money since I was a stay-at-home Mom.

I wouldn't touch Bill with a 10-foot pole for fear I'd catch something.

I'd still rather he was president than Shrub, of course, but, personally, he does nothing for me.

I have always had a genuine fondness for the Clintons. They stood tall under assault for over a decade. Even if my choice loses to Hillary, I am confident that in giving her the keys to the car, she can be trusted not drive America into a ditch (too late, we're already there!). Best of all, and quite frankly more important to me, a Democrat will appoint the next Supreme Court justice(s). w00t

I don't think any woman should endure the emotional abuse serial cheating represents. I grew up watching my mom cry because dad verbally abused her and cheated on her openly, even bragging about it.

No woman should endure it, and I am guy.

51. I grew up in a similar situation as well
my father abused my mother physically and emotionally and cheated on her as well. They divorced when I was relatively young, which I think was a good decision on my mother's part, in her situation. I'm certainly not against divorce, but I think if a couple decide that they can work on it, that's an admirable decision as well. No one should be demonized for trying to make their marriage work.

52. So, given that you grew up in similar circumstances
you understand my stance, right? I know I shouldn't judge women who decide to fight for their marriages, like my mom and Hillary have... but no woman deserves to go through that.

It's a very sensitive matter for me... it hurts me...

53. But it's hard to judge someone else's circumstances from the outside
Hillary's clearly a woman who's capable of making her own choices. I have a hard time demonizing someone for either chosing to get a divorce or choosing to stay married. The only thing that I think absolutely should lead to a divorce is physical abuse, especially when there are children involved. But maybe that's because that's what I went through.

Either way, Hillary seems to be a smart, tough lady who's capable of standing up for herself and making her own decisions.

55. I have a hard time with that as well.
Bill has some wonderful qualities but some terrible ones as well. But I think it's interesting to note that he had no strong male role model in his home when he was growing up. He never knew his own father, and his stepfather as a physically abusive alcoholic. Not that that should excuse Bill's behavior in any way, but it's interesting from a psycological perspective.

99. She Could Have Walked Away A LONG Time Ago... It's Not Like
she was down and out and had nowhere to go. She's a lawyer and she had the means to support herself, unlike many women who are caught up in abusive circumstances and have NOTHING but NOTHING to gain! And fear what may happen to them IF they leave!

I left my husband because I was told of his interest in another woman! Nothing had actually happened, the woman came and told "me" about it, so I said... Go For It To Him... and I divorced him. His friends were shocked by what I did and told me how devastated he was, but I had 2 kids and I wasn't about to be "used" by him.

In the end, after being divorced for about 10 years, we are back together and married again, but he did get the message!

98. I AGREE With You Here... But I'm Not Sure Their Marriage Is The Same
thing. It's about politics and very little else. Hillary isn't weak nor do I think she's stupid, but I DO think she puts up with it because she will reap certain benefits by "standing by HER man!"

No matter WHAT she said in the past, she has looked the other way because of the opportunities Bill Clinton has opened up for her. While Bill Clinton was much more moderate than I, I do think he was charismatic enough and intelligent enough to "beat" the Repukes at their own game!! I feel he did work for America and tried to unite us, but still as a President I have never been able to understand WHY he let himself get caught by the "Monica" thing!

Had it been me, and of course I'm a woman... but the ONE thing I would NEVER have done was fooled around when I was President! It still makes me wonder, and I don't really care all that much where he puts what, but he HAD to know that if caught it would be SUPER MAJOR!!

And despite Hillary's Faux anger, I doubt it was true. She's known about him FOREVER, and if one thinks about it... they actually spend VERY LITTLE time together! They ARE a COUPLE, but I'm not sure it's a MARRIAGE as most see it. It IS convenient though!

You're little "oh it's about womanizing" horseshit is straight out a fucking freerepublic post.

You are a very nice person Ronny, and I honestly hope this obvious disagreement, which is not political by the way, will not be an obstacle in mantaining a cordial relationship as we had in the future.

or because they are rich?

By the way - they are both white but they are not what I would call rich. One is from a middle class background and the other a poor background. Both worked very hard for what they have attained. Is that a problem?

I'm offended that those characteristics (hetero white couple with huge amounts of political power, currently worth somewhere between $10 - 50 million) are being held up as some sort of icon of what the ideal "American" couple is supposed to be.

110. I have some ethical problems with "The American Dream"
If your dream is to be self-sufficient and help others, that's cool.

If your dream is to amass $10-50 million, that's a great success in terms of "capitalism" and consumerism, but not in terms of humanity.

I'm not sure what the point of this OP is other than to either have people give adoring responses or stomp on people who dare think that, while they are very nice people and all that, are not necessarily "America's Couple"...for whatever that is supposed to mean.

Next time, write something with some substance. Maybe some poll where they are seen as "America's Couple" as opposed to other couples...

Labor's Right Turn

West Germany's 6,400,000-member Trade Union Federation has made a turn toward the right with the election of free-enterprising Ludwig Rosenberg, 59, as chairman. Unlike his up-from-the-factory colleagues, Rosenberg is a lifelong white-collar worker who became a union organizer more out of intellectual conviction than economic necessity, fled the Third Reich in 1933 and later helped the British Ministry of Labor find wartime jobs for thousands of refugees from Hitler.
