Kerry Gets 11th-Hour Labor Endorsement
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 04:20 PM by Freddie Stubbs
MILWAUKEE — The three leading candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination made last-minute campaign pitches — with front-runner John Kerry picking up the support of a union coalition that had once endorsed a rival — as voters in Wisconsin went to the polls today.

At a raucous rally in downtown Milwaukee, Kerry, a senator from Massachusetts, won the support of the Alliance for Economic Justice, which had backed Rep. Dick Gephardt. The ad-hoc organization, assembled to unite industrial unions behind a Democratic presidential candidate, promised to roll out what it described as "a massive grassroots voter education and mobilization effort" for the remaining primary season and the general election in November.

Meanwhile, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina visited a coffee shop in Milwaukee, where patrons responded to prompts from Edwards staffers and applauded his arrival.

Exuding election day optimism, he told one woman: "We feel good about things."
