Of that total, 387 votes were cast for Republicans and 165 were for Democrats.
Nearly 36 percent supported Republican Fred Thompson and 35 percent supported Democrat Barack Obama.
Straw poll participants were asked, “If the primaries were held today, which of the following candidates would you support for president in the primary election?”
Behind Obama on the democratic ticket, Hillary Clinton received 31 percent and John Edwards 16 percent.
After Thompson, Republican John McCain received 17 percent and Rudy Giuliani received 15 percent.
It’s important for people to become informed about the candidates and the issues early in the campaign,” said Jay Ferris, Farm Bureau director of grassroots programs. “This poll shows a glimpse of where Nebraska farmers and ranchers stand in the presidential races. Farm Bureau’s goal is that people will become more informed on the issues and get to know where the candidates stand on agriculture.”
