Hillary Clinton turned in a weak performance at a New Hampshire debate Wednesday night as her rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination finally started to scuff up the frontrunner.
And Clinton’s refusal to discuss the options she’d consider for making Social Security sound was the sort of tepid mush that has surrounded the issue for years. She said she’d appoint a commission to study the problem.
Joseph Biden correctly pounced on that answer by saying: “Presidents are supposed to lead.”
The debate, sponsored by NBC and the national Democratic party, was held at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. It could mark a turning point in the campaign if it signals the frontrunner will no longer be getting a free ride from her opponents.
Clinton stoically ignored the swipes and didn’t respond in kind. They reflect the fact her poll numbers have started to climb and if the others want any chance of overtaking her, they need to start challenging her more.
It wasn’t a good night for Clinton.
