Maybe Hillary's laugh has helped her |
|
Several months ago everyone had this perception that she was cold and not a people person. Believe me, that would have been deadly for her as a candidate! If people don't like you then you are OUT! Her people knew they had to revamp her image and make her more likable. With all these videos of her laughing and smiling and being friendly perhaps people are now seeing her 110% differently than they did several months ago? The laugh does seem a little awkward but I don't think it comes even close to rising to the level of the Dean scream or Al Gores sigh. Plus not liking someone because they laugh too much is MUCH different than someone sighing and coming across as superior to the other person.
I think the laugh will disappear for a while so it doesn't get any more negative press but she will refine it and it will be back because it helps her more than it hurts her.
This coming from someone who was pretty hard on her for the laugh a few days ago.

|
I remember back before the 92 elections reading in the paper about Gore and Clinton getting out of the bus to pass around a football, which I thought was foolish. That kind of stuff swings votes. I have no idea why.

32. I've also worked in survey research. You have to evaluate each |
|
survey on its own; some, but not all, are deliberately skewed. I know that at the organization I worked for (one of the major ones) we tried hard to construct accurate and fair questionnaires, and to develop representative samples. We also were careful in reporting results to never say one candidate was ahead of another when the "difference" was within the margin of error -- a mistake I often see made these days.

33. She's very popular in New York, with approval ratings above 60% and |

disapproval in the 30's. I think that as she's come out from behind Bill's shadow, people are warming to her.
When I read those letters she wrote as a college student, she sounded like a witty and thoughtful person, who could laugh at herself -- much like the person she is showing to the world now.

15. Have to disagree. These days, Al's limbered up considerably. That smooch |
|
he and Tipper conducted on stage on world cable news was a smoker. They looked pretty good at it if you ask me.
Also, his language and voice are far more fluid and resonant than they'd been up to say, 2000 or 2001.
I speak as a Bill Bradley delegate from the 2000 primary election and I give Gore the credit he's due.
Also it's quite possible he'll be in the news in about a week or so. Something about glaciers melting...

Why should I be "scared"? Is your post meant to frighten? I'm not the one running (and neither is Gore). Landslide? What proof do you have for this? Do you have a link? Or are you just blowing smoke? As for her "handlers" telling HRC "what to do"---you have proof? Or are you on the "inside"?

She certainly is beginning to seem "inevitable". Perhaps that is why I am trying to warm up to her. To lessen the blow down the road. I didn't like Dean when I thought he was going to win and beat my candidate Clark but once they were both out I realized how much I really liked Dean. I think a lot of people who have strong convictions about their candidate have a hard time warming up the the competition but if they win, sooner or later your perception will soften and they suddenly seem OK.
I like Edwards and Obama but I will certainly get behind Hillary if she wins.

4. The laugh definitely didn't do anything to make her seem less "cold".... |
|
It was the phoniest, most manufactured sound I've heard, and she should just cease with it....
It won't hurt with the base in the primaries, but it could with the less issue-oriented voters in the general, who look for things like perceived genuine-ness and likability when they vote.

7. "I thought it was a good thing |
|
to hear her laugh at the Fox interviewer who tried to paint her as crazy over her statements about a "right wing conspiracy" against her. To me the hearty laugh was not some lame attempt at "humanizing" her but an attempt to show that the Fox interviewers didn't have power over her--a way to completely break out of the picture they were painting of her instead of arguing at the margins. It was a quick demonstration: "that's laughable"--followed by "If you had walked in our shoes ..." Everyone knows the right wing has had it in for Hillary and has focussed on her as some kind of menace, and that it's really been the right wing that's been kind of crazy in this fixation on her and her supposed radical liberalism."Bram-Live Journal"
Hell! Maybe next week the right will say something about her dimples. They have said things about her cleavage. Her hair....Hell, I cannot wait to hear what they have to say about HRC's liver....

8. Do you really mean to suggest that Hillary will "refine" her laugh and it will be back? |
|
You've got to be kidding. The problem with the laugh is that it is such a cold, calculating, villainous sounding laugh. Refining it will just make things worse.
I was thinking about this whole issue today and came to the conclusion that one of the primary problems I have about Hillary's candidacy is that I've had enough of electing a president with a foot in the past. I don't want another president who is trying to right wrongs done to a family member by the other political party or foreign leaders in the past. I want a change. I want a leader who is focused on the future. We have several candidates who fit the bill. My favorite is Edwards, and I am working for his campaign. But Hillary and her laugh. Oh, please, why can't people see where that will lead us and the whole nation. We don't need four years of revenge of the Clintons for wrongs done in the past. Let's move forward. The country can't afford a president as bitter as Hillary's laugh.

Oh did everyone forget the serious question just asked ? No ok ha ha.... ha.. ha they forget yet, now let me dance around the subject that was brought up and ignore the direct question. Oh so presidential. I know everyone likes poking at Dennis Kucinich but I respect him because he isn't afraid to answer questions directly, its like he really means what he says. So strange from a politician, but I guess when you don't sell your soul, your not worried about appeasing a certain crowd, you just answer honestly. I think one day in America more people will appreciate honesty and someone in politics being straightforward but it looks like it wont be 2008.

43. It hurts me to admit it - but you might have a point |
|
I am one of the people who has been critical of Hillary's excessive use of laughter during the past couple of weeks (as Hillary's fans here will testify).
I thought her laughing was VERY effective in her appearance on FOX News Sunday (September 23rd).
But I thought during the MSNBC debate, and also on Real Time with Bill Maher, it looked like she was using the laughing as a way to avoid dealing with difficult questions.
But the majority of people don't spend time trawling YouTube looking for clips of every TV appearances. At most they might have seen 1 or 2 of Hillary's recent TV interviews.
I think on balance, and if used sparingly, the laughing makes Hillary look more relaxed and happy! :-)
I have an honors degree in Psychology and I have seen research showing that in 2000 and 2004, George Bush was perceived by many people as "the happy guy". Most of us her on DU always hated his smirk - but back then a lot of Republicans saw it as a warm smile(!)
In contrast - Al Gore and John Kerry were seen as too serious and therefore "the sad guy".
A lot of folks will always vote for "the happy guy" over "the sad guy".
I think it will only help Hillary if people see her as "the happy guy" (in in her case, gal) B-)
Disclaimer: I do not support Hillary Clinton's campaign. GORE-OBAMA 2008 B-)

It's all over the Web, everywhere. And most of the responses have not been kind. And if this continues for a few more weeks, it might very well approach scream/sigh territory. Its the most embarassing moment of the campaign for her so far, and I don't know how they can stop it.

|
That a thread like this gets reply after reply denying that it helps her, and that there have been multiple threads on the topic...just shows how dominant she is...I mean c'mon...people here are criticizing her for her laugh...her laugh for god sakes...
Are people so worried that she will continue to pull away that even the most banal of her personality traits becomes an avenue of attack...?
She is a bit like the Yankees...the more successful they are the more irrational the hatred of them gets...we daily get news of the success Hillary is having in this campaign, and with every piece her critics find even more bizarre things to criticize her for...
Let's just hope we can get the Republicans to do the same thing...because the more over the top it gets, the more it helps her...
