COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Bob Jones III, chancellor of the Christian fundamentalist school named for his family, is endorsing Republican Mitt Romney for president.

<<snip>>

"We're proud to have Dr. Jones' support and look forward to working with him to communicate Governor Romney's message of conservative change to voters," Romney spokesman William Holley said in a statement.

Jones didn't immediately respond to a message left Tuesday evening by The Associated Press. But he told a Greenville newspaper that supporting Romney is critical to make sure former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani doesn't win the GOP nomination and that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton doesn't win the election.

<<snip>>

Romney and Jones would appear to be a political odd couple, with the Southern fundamentalist Christian throwing his support behind the Mormon who was governor of Massachusetts.

<<snip>>

"As a Christian I am completely opposed to the doctrines of Mormonism," Jones told the newspaper. "But I'm not voting for a preacher. I'm voting for a president. It boils down to who can best represent conservative American beliefs, not religious beliefs."

1. That's quite a coup for Romney.
I'm sure they teach all the students at Bob Jones that Mormons are a non-Christian cult and that they are going to Hell.

2. Well, at least I respect the last statement you transcribed,
but still suspicious that he has no other choice.

3. Yeah, something stinks...
that last paragraph is way to secular for Bob Jones.

4. Josh Marshall had a good observation about this...
Andrew Sullivan says this is an example of how Republicans will rally by uniting in opposition to Hillary. And I don't doubt that is and will prove to be true. But I think the Grand Inquisitor protests too much.

Look at the simple logic of his statement and it's clearly not "all about beating Hillary." The polls, at least for the moment, show that, head to head, Rudy does much better against HIllary than Romney. Name recognition may be the big factor there; Romney may be able to catch up there. And polls that give GOP voters the choice, show a substantial minority opting for a spoiler third party candidate.

7. I agree. It's win-win. Mitt is weaker and Rudy would be a worse president.

8. I Rather Run Against Mitt
He would be easy to define as a flip flopper and empty vessel...

Politics is all about defining your opponent better than he defines you...

That's why I like Hillary...When it comes to hardball politics she's Michael Corleone with a uterus... She will not allow herself to be Swift-Boated...

10. "Dr." Bob Jones, III: BA Bob Jones "University," MA Bob Jones, U., no academic doctorate.
Bob Jones III has been awarded honorary doctorates by two small Bible colleges and a seminary. The "University" which bears his grandfather's name, and of which Bob Jones III is a graduate (BA, MA) and Chancellor, is not accredited. Bob Jones "University" is located right here in Greenville, SC.

Bob Jones in a nutshell (and I do mean NUTshell!):

Bob Jones III once declared that BJU had banned interracial dating because "God has separated people for His own purpose," but during his presidency, BJU abandoned its long-standing rule over which the university had lost its federal tax-exempt status in 1983. Jones announced the policy change during an interview on Larry King Live on March 3, 2000.

In 1982, when asked by TV talk show host Phil Donahue, "Does anybody get to heaven if he's not born again?" Jones replied, "Absolutely not. Jesus told Nicodemus, a religious man, 'You must be born again.'...The Lord Jesus said, 'I am the way, the truth and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me.'"

Jones once "denounced Ronald Reagan as 'a traitor to God's people' for choosing as his vice president George H.W. Bush, whom Jones called "a devil." But some years later, he personally thanked the elder Bush for being a good president.

Jones has referred to Catholicism as "the religion of the anti-Christ and a Satanic system" and called Mormonism and Catholicism "cults which call themselves Christian."

Shortly after George W. Bush won reelection in 2004, Bob Jones III sent a congratulatory letter to the president declaring that he had "been given a mandate. ... Put your agenda on the front burner and let it boil. You owe the liberals nothing. They despise you because they despise your Christ."

Jones's most often repeated quotation: "The most sobering reality in the world today is that people are dying and going to Hell today."

In October 2007, Jones endorsed Governor Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination for President.
