8. Taylor is my Congressman |
|
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 12:43 PM by BOSSHOG
His point of view (per local newspaper this AM):
- "Taylor said funding the program through a hefty tobacco tax would hurt those the plan was intended to help. A disproportionate number of the state's (Mississippi) smokers are poor, he said. Taylor suggested instead the federal government close a loophole that allows large insurance companies to pay a lower tax percentage. Those dollars, per Taylor, could go toward the plan."
I'll withhold tar and feathers for right now.

"Taylor said funding the program through a hefty tobacco tax would hurt those the plan was intended to help." - that doesn't even make any f'ing sense whatsoever.
More like it would hurt his CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS FROM HIS PERSONAL TOBACCO LOBBYISTS
Sorry, he's a total dick for what he did. And none of his lame ass excuses hold water. He's an embarrassment to his party.

a little more familiar with Taylor then you. He's not a total dick of any sort. I'm very thankful he was our congressman right after Katrina and for his efforts in that venue since then. He's a veteran. He crossed swords very successfully with the insurance companies and his current proposal would increase taxes on insurance companies and the funds go towards S-Chip. And I do know that if he were not in that congressional seat it would be occupied by a neanderthal backwoods south Mississippi Evangelistic lunatic who would make Taylor seem like Jane Fonda. In South Mississippi we do not have the luxury of picking and choosing whom we want to run for office.

20. Glad to hear you feel like you are getting adequate representation from your "Dem". |
|
I still think he is an embarrassment to his party and a disgrace to it's ideals. He should think about switching parties, seems like he is more ideologically aligned with our opponents.
And his "proposal" to fund S-CHIP - give me a break! That is a "cover my ass" that he KNOWS has no way of ever happening, big fucking deal.
I'm unlucky enough to be represented by all repubs, but at least I KNOW WHO MY FRIENDS ARE. In TX, if a fucking "Democrat" did this, he would be run out of town on a rail. This is the state of Sam Rayburn, LBJ, Ann Richards, Lloyd Doggett, etc. - your kind of "Democrat" wouldn't have lasted 10 minutes in that chamber room voting the way he did.
Guess we just have different ideas of what being a "Democrat" means.

We have a democratic candidate for governor who wants to bring prayer back in schools. I have been a democrat my whole fucking life and your attitude towards my desire to promote the party in Mississippi just wants me to say fuck it cause some democrat in Texas has a holier then thou attitude.

30. Sorry you are taking this so personally, it's not about you. But these Dems are what is killing our |
|
party. When they actively vote against the very ideals and planks of our party platform, they should be called out LOUDLY about what they are doing. They do not deserve the benefits of calling themselves "Democrats", getting recognition from our national organization and being allowed to caucus with us.
I'm not saying they shouldn't be in congress, I'm saying they need to be TRUTHFUL about whose goals they are serving and it's NOT OURS.
Our party is severely wounded by this type of "Democrat" and as much crap as I put up with from republicans, I will not stand for it from someone from my own party.
I respect differences of opinions, but this vote cuts to the very ideals and platform of our party, not just some trivial regional difference.

34. You do whatever you need to do to honor your own conscience as a Democrat. |
|
I embrace the ideals of FDR & LBJ that have been the most long-lasting improvements to the lives of Americans - EVER. There are some votes that are the very embodiment of those ideals and legislation - this was one of them. This is what makes a Democrat a Democrat to me.
You have to do whatever reflects your conscience as a Democrat.
I reserve the right to challenge any "Democrat" that actively works against the platform of our party, as it destroys us all.

who lost his home to Katrina did a good job of crossing swords with the Insurance Companies in South Mississippi and his efforts aided thousands in that effort. He also was on the ground driving bulldozers right after the hurricane. He has an alternative proposal for SCHIP which I have posted elsewhere in this thread. Right or wrong, he's not sitting on his thumbs. And the least you can say about him is that he is occuping a congressional seat that otherwise would be held by a neanderthal right wing religious lunatic. Down here we don't have the luxury of picking and choosing our "liberals."

Would you fucking pre package the perfect fucking congressperson and ship him/her down here to serve us. Plesase share with me the strategy a democrat must use to get elected in the land of the neanderthal, the unwashed and the uneducated, the easily swayed who are told who to vote for from the pulpit. This is not the ideal fucking part of the world for liberal politics to thrive. Excuse the fuck out of me for rationalizing my congressman's attempts to aid and abet his constituents. If there is a better candidate I am missing please point him/her out to me.

33. I think most news sources are incorrect with the 289 number. There are 2 vacant House seats at the |
|
moment, making a total of 433. It takes a 2/3 majority vote, so that would be 433 x .66 which is 286, right?

there is only one vacancy (JoAnn Davis). THe second vacancy was filled before the vote (newly elected rep.Tsongas in Mass). That's 434 x 66.7 percent = 289

Maybe it's undeserved thankfulness... maybe he'd vote for a war on Iran... maybe he'd vote for whatever right-wing fucktard candidates bush nominated no matter how stinky... I don't know.
But err on the side of caution... and caution says if it's not a repuke it's better than the alternative. We will have to leave it to the people in his district to field a challenger if they're dissatisfied.
