Yepsen: A host of horrors might yet haunt front-runners
David Yepsen
To hear some in the political community talk, Hillary Clinton has the Democratic nomination for president all locked up, and Rudy Giuliani has a commanding lead on the Republican side.
Uh, people who want to place big bets on those two right now should ask President Howard Dean for some counseling.
To be sure, Clinton and Giuliani lead in national polls. Both would like to have people believe they're the inevitable nominees in order to increase fundraising and discourage contributions to others.
But early leads in national polls reflect only name recognition, and these two are well known. If others start winning, or beating expectations in places like Iowa and New Hampshire, those national surveys will shift overnight, thanks to the free media those candidates will receive.
----------------- Nothing in this race is inevitable.

3. And that's a very important point. |
|
Hillary is either disliked or seen as too safe and generic by many Democrats. Many of the polls show her just a few percentage points ahead of Republican candidates, but that will be a very different story when a Republican candidate is chosen and the Republicans coalesce around their candidate, and by then it will be too late for Democrats to do anything about it. At this point, assuming inevitability is a weakness, not a strength.

4. they annoited her that she is the candidate the GOP wants to run against-Heck they already |
|
sent political hack Tim Griffin positioned as US Attorney for Arkansas to dig for dirt on her. (Yes it was short lived-but probably long enough to find a little tidbit to pull out just before the election.

5. It would be real ugly, and it wouldn't even have to be true. |
|
but they know that enough will stick to Hillary for their dirty tricks to work.

9. I don't know if there was anything left to find in Arkansas |

They did a pretty thorough job in the nineties and left no stone unturned. Did you ever see the movie "Hunting the President"? These people were unbelievable. What they couldn't find, they just made up.

6. People need to be reminded of this every day between now |
|
and January. There is no "sure thing" in politics, but every FOUR years people tend to forget.

7. I'm repeatedly amazed at the ASSUMPTION that it's going to be Hillary. Even |
|
she's said she's not taking it for granted. I'm still very optimistic about Biden's performance - circumstances are constantly in flux.

If the media keeps repeating something over and over, people are inclined to believe it.
