... Dr. Wecht was indicted last year on 84 counts, including mail and wire fraud, as well as theft from an organization that receives federal funds ...
Mr. Thornburgh, 75, was the U.S. attorney in Pittsburgh from 1969 to 1975 and then served three years as attorney general from 1988 to 1991. He was invited based on that experience, and a House Judiciary Committee aide said that the session should help flesh out questions about how the Department of Justice conducts its investigations and makes charging decisions, as well as whether the political independence of such prosecutions is being respected.
The hearing is titled: "Allegations of Selective Prosecution: The Erosion of Public Confidence in our Federal Justice System." ...
Two others have been asked to testify on Tuesday. They include former Alabama U.S. Attorney Doug Jones, who was an early defense attorney in the bid-rigging case against former Gov. Don Siegelman, as well as Donald C. Shields, a professor emeritus at the University of Missouri. Mr. Shields co-wrote a study looking at the number of Democratic versus Republican officeholders who have been investigated by the Department of Justice during the Bush administration.
