How Reliable Is the Zogby-Journal Poll?
“The Zogby stuff, on scientific grounds, is quite questionable,” says Zukin. “Online, Internet, opt-in polling, where people volunteer to be respondents, doesn’t really have a basis in scientific validity. There are two kinds of samples in the world. There are probability samples, and there are non-probability samples.”

The Zogby interactive polls, says Zukin, clearly fall into the latter camp. “With probability samples, when everybody has a known chance of being selected, you can make pretty valid inferences about the population from which it is drawn,” says Zukin. “You can’t do that at all with self-selected surveys. That’s a problem.”

Another problem with Internet-based polling, says Zukin, is that, in general, Web and email-based surveys tend to overvalue the opinions of young people. A group that is notoriously lousy at showing up to actually vote.

“Internet coverage is now about two-thirds of the population,” says Zukin. “But it’s really age-skewed and, to a lesser extent, education-skewed, in the wrong way for voters. It’s younger people who are online. It’s older people who are not online. It’s older people who vote. And younger people who don’t.”

1. Looks like Zogby has upset the RW Gallup pollsters with
better samplings. Since Gallup has never polled me but Zogby does on a regular basis, I believe that in getting my opinion, they are using a broader and probably more accurate sampling that gives different results than the ones the RW likes. I'm an old lady btw so I don't know where that person assumes that they only poll young people.

3. The Link Isn't From Gallup
It's from the Columbia Journalism Review which is the gold standard for journalism...

6. No it isn't from Gallup. Since it is Columbia and they do a gold
standard, it means they publish stuff from both sides. I don't have time to research where this article comes from but I'll bet it leads back to one of the RW think tanks who like to discredit institutions when they are getting too close to the truth.

8. It's Written By Felix Gillette Of The New York Observer
"It covers the rich and powerful of New York with an unusual depth of coverage although has been criticized for its narrow focus on Manhattan and its liberal political perspective."

2. The Regular Zogby Polls in the past elections have
been some of the most accurate. In fact, Zogby was the only Polling
Company that saw the GOP Rout of 94 coming.

In the 06 elections his reporting was on target.

I am one of the "older" people who have participated in the Online
polls (Zogby)

7. There Were Ten Or So Battleground States In 04
Zogby got four of them wrong- FL, OH, VA, and NV...

I could have got better results by flipping a coin...

11. my point all month
is no poll this early on can be used as a measure of the outcome. you have been touting polls all month with Hilary in the lead... those of course are golden. One just ONE comes out without Hillary in a not so favorible position... This is your Third post attempting to tear it apart as unrealiable.

Whats up with that.?.

I don't like to see folks misled...We see what happens when folks follow a Misleader...They end up in unwinnable wars where hundreds of thousands die and billions are wasted...

When folks start accepting small lies , the foundation is set for them to accept bigger ones...

I don't like to see them misled either. jumping in lockstep with a particular candidate because they happen to be winning this weeks poll is misleading also. instead of touting (favorable)polls and discounting unfavorable ones why not let undecideds choose for themselves. My Guy Joe Biden Constantly out debates your gal Hillary. He can stand on his own. whereas Hillary wont answer a question unless she has a consensus of her advisor's agreeing with the latest poll.
I am done here. thank you for exposing yourself, um I mean your agenda.

Do you know the difference between a probability sample poll and a non probability sample poll?

And are the abundance of emoticons a substitute for the paucity of understanding of a topic?

9. Here's an older person who goes on the internet
and has since the very start....used computers since 1897 been on the internet since 1994 and VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE....got that....seniors are ignored but we sure as hell make a difference.

We are not vapid and American Idol crazy, we enjoy the show sometimes but are not so wrapped up in it we let the real issues pass us by.

We are interested in feeding the needy, in finding measures that support children, seniors, and the poor. So I wish the damn people would give it a rest when the say seniors are on the net. WE GOT THE COUNTRY WHERE IT WAS BEFORE BUSH RUINED IT. REMEMBER THAT.

Nobody is suggesting older folks don't use the net at all...What they are suggesting is that older folks don't use the net as much as younger folks...

The older you are the less likely you are to be wired and the less time you are likely to spend on the net...I suspect if you did some searching you would find lots of articles on the topic...

22. My take
"Online, Internet, opt-in polling"

Loose translation:

Not, at, all.

Online polling is often skewed (usually deliberately by the respondents) in rather bizarre proportions.
