Poll question: True or False- "Edwards is not progressive. Hell he can not even pull his own state." |
|
Heard it in a McClurkin thread- an Obama supporter claimed this to deflect questions about how "progressive" Obama actually is. Personally, even though I'm a Hillary supporter, I agree that Edwards is probably one of, if not *THE* most progressive candidate.

1. He'll get healthcare and SS straightened out and he's a damn good lawyer to boot |
|
Plus he seems to be in this thing just to make his wife proud. In fact, I see him as a new William Jennings Bryan who can pull in the rural voters out there who wouldn't touch a ballot with HRC's name on it.

3. When did North Carolina become a progressive state? |

The statement is a contradiction.

16. I was thinking the same thing |
|
I think Edwards could very well be considered "progressive", depending upon how narrow one's definition of "progressive" is. But ability to carry NC has little to do with how progressive Edwards is. NC may be moving slowly towards "swing" state status, but a state that only recently stopped electing Senator Jesse Helms should not be considered representative of "progressivism"!

17. Yes. The statement is either a contradiction or includes two |
|
completely unrelated proposals. It's a very strange poll, but then what's new about that?

4. Edwards is the most progressive candidate this year, I believe. |
|
Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 10:21 PM by Basileus Basileon
I have some doubts as to how much of his platform he actually believes, given his opinions when he was a member of the Senate. However, I'm more than willing to take a late convert if he'll do the right thing, and that's why I'm supporting him at the moment.
I don't know what his popularity back home has to do with suggesting he's not progressive.

5. The question implies an either or |
|
Either Edwards is a progressive and he can carry NC, or he's not and he cannot.
Although I do think it is possible for a progressive to win in NC, in recent history people such as Elizabeth Dole have done better. If Edwards does not do well in NC, it's because he's a progressive, which does not go down in some parts of the state, such as Winston-Salem, the rural bits, and anywhere freaky-ass people gather to handle snakes and babble like toddlers.

15. Actually, the point of this poll was to point out the ridiculous desperation of some B.O. supporters |
|
Although I can certainly see how this can be construed as an "anti-edwards" poll. For the record, I've made it pretty clear many times that Edwards is my second favourite candidate.

11. NC has progressive areas, but for the most part... |
|
Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 10:30 PM by TWriterD
they are surrounded by a whole helluva lotta red. Here's a sampling of what I see on a daily basis, and I live in one of the blue areas:
--"If You Can't Feed 'Em, Don't Breed 'Em" --The Confederate flag in the shape of a woman on all fours with the caption "Southern Style" --"Fred Thompson '08" --"Who Would Osama Vote For '08" --"Shoot a Yankee for Jesus"
And I'm still not used to this: Jesus fish and scripture on some fast food cups.
It means nothing that he "can not even pull his own state."

And he is a progressive. And he may be able to win his own state.

He was a moderate when he was a Senator. He was a moderate when he ran for President 4 years ago.
Now he talks like a populist but doesn't act like a populist.
I'm not really sure who he is.

20. The key is, he was able to get elected in a state that is overwheleming GOP. |
|
He started speaking in public, about the plight of the poor, in 1998. And his life's work, has not been for the big guy, but for the little guy.
When he was in private practic, he and his law partner, received a national award for public service. Not service to the rich, not service to the corportaions, not service to the big lobby's, but PUBLIC SERVICE.

Edwards is CURRENTLY (not historically) more progressive than Clinton and Obama.

Edwards knows how to win NC. He has done it before. He ran as a moderate in 1998 and was elected.
