"One candidate is defining the 'politics of hope' while the others are abandoning them,"
Edited on Tue Oct-30-07 04:19 PM by MethuenProgressive
Clinton's campaign even sent out a memo from its top strategist claiming the politics-of-hope mantle. "One candidate is defining the 'politics of hope' while the others are abandoning them," Mark Penn writes. http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/10/30/438000.aspx

I expect Obama will call Hillary "dishonest" and Edwards will hint she's taken bribes.
The "hope" seems to be that anyone cares what say anymore...

5. On First Read I posted that whatever Clinton is paying Mark Penn, she's
getting ripped off. Transparent and pitiable. Almost reeks of desparation - almost. I wouldn't have thought someone leading as strongly would succumb to this crap. I blame Mark Penn, but I've also heard Hillary is a control freak, so I doubt this went out without her blessing.

8. So, what part isn't true?
Did you read past the words 'Mark Penn'?

9. 'doh! Was I supposed to read past the words 'Mark Penn'? No WONDER I
didn't get it.

I didn't say anything wasn't TRUE, I said it's a transparent attempt to present Hillary as superior to the others while this very memo gets the jabs in very well, thank you.

I agree with these statements:

Does the “politics of hope” mean launching attacks on one candidate? Or does it mean laying out a vision for the American people? Does it mean questioning a rival’s integrity? Or does it mean talking about the change we need?

The Clinton campaign believes the “politics of hope” should be about outlining how our candidate will reverse the policies of the Bush Administration and give America a new beginning for the 21st Century.

Yes, we need to know what the candidates' visions for our future.

BUT I don't think it's either/or. If valid attacks are launched, that's fair. If a'rival's integrity' is a valid issue, the public should be aware.

16. You say that as if it's a bad thing
OMG!!! He's thinks his candidate is superior!! He's attacking with facts!!

"Losing ground in the polls, Senator Obama announced over the weekend that he will abandon the politics of hope and attack Hillary in tonight’s debate. Senator Edwards, who rose to prominence in 2004 by eschewing attacks on other Democrats, formally announced last night that he is going to attack Senator Clinton’s character.

Considering that both Senators Obama and Edwards made their names by pledging to be positive, the last thing one would have expected was for either of them to go out and announce with pride that they were now going to go negative on a fellow Democrat. It’s unprecedented in my experience."

If Obama and Edwards can promise to attack her and still be considered "candidates of hope" then surely Hillary has as much claim on the title for herself.

She is already considered the candidate most likely to get us out of Iraq. She took the title "candidate o change" from Obama. Now she's going for hope.

18. I think if Hillary didn't have Mark Penn, she wouldn't have released such a
statement and she would have handled it flawlessly during the debate. It was a criticism of him calling out others on their behavior, yet slyly engaging in the same.

10. Tim Grieve at Salon.com calls out Clinton campaign for tactics tied to this
He claims the Clinton campaign is using not-for-publication emails, etc. to keep pushing their spin with reporters, bloggers, and others.

http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2007/10/30/hope/index.html

Grieve claims that neither the Obama nor Edwards campaigns are using these methods on their opponents.
