From the John Edwards blog... Do people know that Edwards
voted for Clinton's bill on China MFN bill? How do Edwards supporters feel about his vote on this bill?

"Free Trade = Low Pay For Americans, Toxic Imports and sickness for Workers in China

John Edwards is a fighter for you and me!! Let's fight for him!!!
Now how is that for the end product of Free Trade as we know it, and as it was ushered in by the Clinton Administration, with Gore as First Cheerleader.

When I look back on the Clinton years, it is with considerable sadness, that Bill, in his rush to free trade, pretty unbridled, free trade, and promotion of the DLC, left us behind. In essence, he left the core Democratic Party values behind, and as far as I can see, Hillary has only hastened the pace.

In the San Jose Mercury News today, Loretta Tofani has an astounding article depicting the human misery of workers in China who have become victims to the toxins they use in the manufacture of cheap products for America. Her article is entitled: "The human cost of doing business"

In her article, she starts out:

"The patients arrive every day in Chinese hospitals with disabling and fatal diseases acquired while making products for America." Loretta Tofani, "The human cost of doing business",

1. Having to explain his China trade vote, finally, it looks like
Imports from Peru last year amounted to $5 billion, only 0.03 percent of all U.S. imports. In comparison, China accounts for 16 percent of U.S. imports — nearly $288 billion worth of goods last year. China is running neck and neck with Canada as the top source of U.S. imports.

While Edwards talked about what he sees as excessive CEO pay in his Des Moines speech, he did not mention China at all, alluding only to “ensuing the safety of imported food and drugs” without mentioning any specific country.

Later Thursday, in a meeting with 200 voters in Boone, Iowa, he said, “We’ve got these trade deals that cost Americans millions of jobs, and what do we get in return? Millions of dangerous Chinese toys.”

That line got a good reaction from the crowd.

Edwards didn’t tell them what he himself had said seven years ago when he voted for the China trade deal.

-snip

As he explained his vote on Sept. 19, 2000, Edwards, then a senator from North Carolina, told the Senate, “Trade between U.S. companies and the Chinese will likely explode in the coming years, generating jobs and revenues in this country. It could easily be the keystone in the continuing prosperity of this nation.”

-snip

The 2002 vote to authorize President Bush to invade Iraq has become a mea culpa moment for Democratic presidential contenders. Edwards has ostentatiously confessed what he now sees as his error in that vote.

But the 2000 China vote hasn’t become a cause for repentance and confession.

I am sure he is sorry, though.

2. Thanks for the article, I have to believe that the person who
posted on the Edwards blog was not aware of his vote on the China bill???

Time after time Edwards brings up an issue, recently trade and missile defense, when he voted for these issues when he was in the Senate. Maybe the Republicans do not know about his previous votes/speeches and will not use them against him in the GE  I'll pass on that bet :)

4. Labor groups were against the China bill...
did you ever see the AFL-CIO candidates page that I have posted? I still think it is strange to selectively post votes on the candidates, almost as if they are trying to influence a vote???

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=1777600

I came across this page when looking back on the votes for the China Trade bill in 2000. What is interesting is how the page includes information on the China Trade bill for certain candidates and excludes vote information for other candidates. I would assume this page is compiled for the benefit of their members so why would they be selective on the voting records of the candidates? Does anyone else find this strange?

Off to watch the debate :)

5. I met John Edwards 3 years ago

I met him again last week. I believe he has learned from his past mistakes. How many Republicans do that?

7. When it comes to life and death issues such as pushing
for the Iraq war, people losing their jobs because the company has moved their operation overseas to take advantage of cheap labor, our diminishing rights because of the Patriot Act etc....well I'm glad that you feel he has learned from his mistakes. I'd prefer someone who did their research before casting their vote, there are other Dem candidates, it does not have to be a Republican.

What do you make of that AFL-CIO page I posted above and how they selectively included votes for some candidates and left them out for others?

9. Post debate interview Kucinich brings up Edwards vote on the
China trade bill. 'If people really knew about the positions of the candidates you will find most of them have them been inconsistent...'
