This is a start. It's his saying he wants to negotiate without the mailed fist seen poised to strike. He wants to actually negotiate, not proffer theoretical carrots in exchange for surrender. In other words, negotiate for real, not for show. It's something.
But he's got to push forward on issues.

came across as what they are -- a college law professor and a trial lawyer. I hadn't given it any thought, but a trial lawyer would obviously 'play' better in a debate than a professor. Made sense. Just because Obama isn't as practiced in debates and other such demanding venues, we shouldn't discount his message.
Just IMO, natch.
