Harvard study "proves liberal media bias"
"Journalism: The debate is over. A consensus has been reached. On global warming? No, on how Democrats are favored on television, radio and in the newspapers."

4. Here's a link:

But, hey, as long as we're posting links, how about this one, which found that conservative authors far outweigh liberals on the op-ed page, where bias is actually allowed?

2. Welcome to DU. It's standard practice to provide a link when quoting a source.

"Just like so many reports before it, a joint survey by the Project for Excellence in Journalism and Harvard's Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy — hardly a bastion of conservative orthodoxy — found that in covering the current presidential race, the media are sympathetic to Democrats and hostile to Republicans."

It is just in coverage of the presidential candidates as I read it. I was just thinking maybe even the media is tired of the way things are going with this administration. One thing we can all be happy about is the fact Cheney isn't running for president.

9. The link tells another story than the headline.
It's just this campaign coverage - hardly a surprise.

"...found that in covering the current presidential race, the media are sympathetic to Democrats and hostile to Republicans."

13. The OP was using the link's headline which does actually say there's a liberal bias
Of course, that conclusion is based on nothing but positive coverage of Democrats vs negative coverage of Republicans which has nothing to do with liberalism.

12. They should be. Our candidates are a thousand times better.
That's obvious to anyone with a pulse.

17. Let's see, Democratic candidates are qualified, Republican candidates, not so much.
So, the media just might be pointing out the capabilities of the candidates (or lack thereof).

That makes them "sympathetic" to the candidate who is better qualified.

8. Exactly. Its a bias of the truth over propaganda.
the conservatives, or whatever we want to call them, have morphed into a herd of liars.

5. Maybe it's because there are more Democrats than Republicans, period.

And it's not our problem if Republicans live up in hills afraid that the 9/11-Y2K bug will get them if they come down.

10. I find that hard to believe
Plus, more exposure does not equal good or fair exposure. Kerry got a lot of exposure in the press, but it was all negative.

11. To say there's a liberal bias based on amount of coverage is baloney
That has nothing to do with liberalism! Anyone who watches the broadcast media knows there is no liberal bias. To be liberal is much more than covering Democrats in a more positive light.

15. A Media Matters .org report shows quite the opposite...
Media Matters for America published a report in September 2007 that reveals something quite different:

"This project did something that has never been done before: It amassed data on the syndicated columnists published by nearly every daily newspaper in the country".

"Media Matters for America set out to make a systematic assessment of the syndicated columnist landscape, we...contact(ed) each paper individually and asked which syndicated columnists are published on their op-ed pages".

"The results show that in paper after paper, state after state, and region after region, conservative syndicated columnists get more space than their progressive counterparts. As Editor & Publisher paraphrased one syndicate executive noting, "U.S. dailies run more conservative than liberal columns, but some are willing to consider liberal voices."
