Clinton Says Criticism Goes with Lead
Clinton Says Criticism Goes With Lead

Nov 2, 2007 1:53 PM (15 mins ago)
By BETH FOUHY, AP

CONCORD, N.H. (Map, News) - Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday that her status as the Democratic presidential front-runner - not her gender - has led her male primary rivals to intensify their criticism of her.

"I don't think they're piling on because I'm a woman. I think they're piling on because I'm winning," Clinton told reporters after filing paperwork to appear on the New Hampshire primary ballot.

"I anticipate it's going to get even hotter, and if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. I'm very much at home in the kitchen," she said.

The New York senator's comments came three days after a televised debate in which her six male opponents challenged her character, electability and apparent unwillingness to answer tough questions.

1. Hillary could have said that yesterday, but she was too busy calling out the good old boys, playing

the gender/victim cards.

Guess Mark Penn's overnight polling was not good.

3. But then she would not have had the advantage of framing it in her favor.

And Obama played into by assailing her as hiding behind the fact she's a woman.

Now she can play tough while at the same time garnering natural sympathy.

6. She already has reframed it, which is why Obama tried to attack her as playing the gender card.

If it wasn't working, he wouldn't have said that.

10. The debate was reframed as a gang up on a woman.
You can't deny that her campaign was able to do that.

Which is why Obama said his statement about the gender card.

Hillary now that she's made her point can now laugh it off and play the candidate who came thru the fire.

Your guy's campaign is playing checkers, Hillary's team is playing chess.

25. Too late for what?
There's another debate in 2 weeks.

The media has already moved on to analyzing post debate moves and next week when the polls don't move the story line will be wondering what can take Hillary down.

28. Too late to repair the damage. This is a major gaffe, playing the gender/victim card and following
that up with double talk on keeping her First Lady records unavailable.

31. LOL? What damage would that be? Clinton's or Obama's?
Obama was cast as the bystander as the media has found the flavor of a feisty John Edwards more to their liking.

Next week when you see Edwards move up at Obama's expense while Hillary's numbers remain relatively stable you will see.

15. That is exactly what she shouldn't be doing.
It's far too obvious. I admire Senator Clinton, but she's screwing up of late.

"If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen..."

"I'm at home in the kitchen..."

That's just awful.

I find it embarrassing. The folksy witticisms she's using actually embarrass me as a grown woman. I'm afraid she has gotten some very bad political advice.

2. Really? Is that why they sent pout the email saying she was attacked and piled on?
What about her spokesperson claiming she was piled on by "seven men" but was a strong woman? Clinton is doing it again. She can't even take one side in this issue. She is out right lying about her own campaign. She wants it both ways.

11. Hey Hillary, how about a straight answer ?
"criticism goes with the lead" is not the sort of commitment American voters are looking for.

Just a straight answer?

"I don't think they're piling on because I'm a woman. I think they're piling on because I'm winning," Clinton told reporters after filing paperwork to appear on the New Hampshire primary ballot.

"I anticipate it's going to get even hotter, and if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. I'm very much at home in the kitchen," she said.

The Clinton's play chess while their opponents play checkers...

I can see why they are besides themselves and in the finals throes of personality disintegration...

HRC is like a monster from a Japanese horror movie... With every attack she keeps getting stronger and rising in the polls...

21. My posting was somewhat in jest, however,...
from the article referenced in the OP:

Clinton herself referred to the "all boys club of presidential politics" in a speech at Wellesley College Thursday.

23. She did say the all boys club of presidential politics,
but that was in the context of talking to women students at the college about goals and glass ceilings. I don't think she implied that the pile on happened because she was a woman.
