Joe. My. God.: Obama "We had a controversy A WHILE BACK"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIQLwe-MmxY

Notice at the -0:55 mark how Obama refers to the McClurkin controversy as happening "a while back." Uh, yeah. Waaaay back on Sunday. Spin, spin, spin.

Also from the same forum, but not in the clip:

Appearing at the Cedar Rapids Public Library, Abbi Swanson whose son is gay, asked what he would do to give him the same rights as opposite-sex couples. "You want the word marriage and I believe that the issue of marriage has become so entangled - the word marriage has become so entangled with religion - that it makes more sense for me as president, with that authority, to talk about the civil rights that are conferred " he told her.

Both Swanson and Lamb later told the Des Moines Register they were not satisfied with Obama's position. "I'm not completely satisfied that he's not for gay marriage ... but I'm happy he does believe in equal rights for gay citizens," Lamb said.

Swanson told the paper, "There isn't an electable candidate out there that has given me the answer I want, which is everything."

We're not going to get "everything", but we should at least demand that candidates who purport to support most gay issues not hand the microphone over to the "ex-gays". When the McClurkin issue first reared up, I was perplexed, then disappointed. Now I'm just pissed.

1. There goes Donnie's BFF...talking out of both sides yet again
I have yet to hear an apology from St. Obama for giving a microphone, a starring role and a stage and an audience to an "ex-gay" clown to spew homophobic filth, all in the name of Obama '08 (tagline: We Need The Votes)

"A while back" is when you got wasted at your cousin's 4th of July Barbeque. Not last week.

Ye gods Obama is made of lose and fail.

4. What a disgusting display
So much for "the audacity of hope".

"we have to reach out to those with a different attitude..." - in other words, Welcome, Bigots!

5. *kneads forehead*
oy...oy...oy...

If I were his campaign manager, I'd have to ask Obama, "What the fuck are you thinking?" And then start looking for other work. For all intended purposes, the Obama campaign is done for. If he manages to move up in the polls, his rivals have plenty of ammo to make his supporters second-guess their support of him. The McGerkin episode demonstrates Obama is not ready for prime time.

7. Blah blah blah, civil rights that are conferred
New Jersey anyone? It's already been proven that Civil Unions/Domestic Partnerships do not give the same rights as Marriage, no matter how well intentioned they are. The only thing that gives the same rights as Marriage is Marriage.

The thing is that all of these politicians know that, but to keep their religious bigot base happy they use the Civil Union diversion. But there are those of us who know better. The Colored Drinking fountain is not the same. Separate was never equal, and never will be.

And the controversy was not "a while back" as much as you'd like to forget it, Obama.

Edwards said he felt uncomfortable being around gay people. It's pretty clear you are using selective criticism to bash Obama.

When he was at the Presidential Forum carried on the Logo Channel last month. Edwards said that was completely untrue.

I hope you're including straight Democrats like me who were horrified that Obama gave a microphone and a starring role to an "ex-gay" clown at his fundraiser?

Because we're insulted too.

32. And Obama will "unite the party" by showing this kind of leadership?
Here's a newsflash - GLBTQ have noticed that the "real world" is "pretty fucked up" - as you so eloquently put it - and like everyone else, we'd like to support a Democratic nominee who demonstrates some leadership. Obama made a mistake here. Pointing that out is not "doing a hit piece." It's raising very real concerns about the likely leadership of a candidate.

Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 01:50 AM by FreeState
that they must change into heterosexuals. Im sorry you don't see that as a pressing issue - but as a gay man who had to listen to that crap from politicians, my church and my family it is a pressing issue. Many lives are at stake here - especially when someone who should be a role model is allowing harmful and hateful rhetoric to be voiced at his event. It does not matter what he says - he allowed this to happen on his turf.

36. The government should not be involved in marriage because it's a religious institution.
We need to get rid of marriage licenses and just have civil union licenses for both straight and gay couples.
